What Does The Road Ahead Look Like For Harley-Davidson? | Sales Drop By 16%

What Does The Road Ahead Look Like For Harley-Davidson? | Sales Drop By 16%

    Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com
In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch, and we discuss the fact that Harley-Davidson sales dropped by 16% in the 3rd quarter of 2023.  We give you the numbers and break them down.  We provide you with Harley-Davidson's response to the numbers.  We also give our thoughts on the topic.  2023 has been so far so good for Harley-Davidson fanatics. The year started with the reveal of a few new big cruisers, followed by H-D’s new breed of sub-500cc offerings in Asia. Then came the headline-making 2023 CVO duo, which started a new chapter of modernity for the company. However, the story seems different behind the scenes, i.e. in terms of the MoCo’s financials.
As a reminder, Harley-Davidson’s reporting format segments the company into three parts: Harley-Davidson Motor Company (all motorcycles except LiveWire), Harley-Davidson Financial Services, and LiveWire. This structure has been the way the Motor Company has handled its financial reporting since it transformed LiveWire into its own company in 2022.
SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Harley-Davidson reported that retail sales of all its motorcycles (excluding LiveWire) declined in all geographic regions in the third quarter of 2023. Overall, worldwide sales were down 16% on the previous year.  In North America, the Motor Company saw a 15% drop in sales in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. In Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (which count as one region, called EMEA for short), sales fell by 13%. For Asia-Pacific, sales fell by 24%. Finally, in Latin America, sales fell by 11% in the third quarter of 2023.

So what is Harley-Davidson saying?  "Against a challenging macro and consumer backdrop, we have been able to achieve a result that preserves profitability at an industry-leading level. In addition, we successfully launched our pinnacle CVO motorcycles, with CVO retail sales up 25%," said Jochen Zeitz, Chairman, President and CEO of Harley-Davidson. "Harley-Davidson remains committed to its Hardwire strategy with a focus on both desirability and profitability, and we will do everything possible to achieve our goals while being realistic that current market conditions are complex. We are gearing up for '24 and will ensure that we are fully aligned and ready as we close out the year with Q4."

Apps We've Tested And Used For Motorcycle Trips | What You Need To Know

Apps We've Tested And Used For Motorcycle Trips | What You Need To Know

    Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com
In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch and we talk about the motorcycle apps we have tested and used.  We also talk about some that we no longer use.  Mapping, weather, location sharing, and other motorcycle apps can make your trip much more seamless.  Over the years we've narrowed our list of apps down to what we think are the best.
Motorcycle apps can be highly beneficial to riders in several ways. Here are some of the key advantages:
Navigation and GPS: Many motorcycle-specific apps offer specialized navigation features designed for riders. They can provide routes that take into account factors like winding roads, and scenic routes, and avoid highways. Some apps also offer offline maps, which can be crucial in areas with limited or no cellular coverage. Safety Features: Some apps include features aimed at enhancing rider safety. These can include real-time traffic updates, accident alerts, and road hazard notifications. Additionally, some apps have features that can track your ride and notify emergency contacts in case of an accident. Maintenance and Service: There are apps available that help riders keep track of their motorcycle's maintenance schedule. They can send reminders for services like oil changes, tire replacements, and other regular maintenance tasks. Community and Social Interaction: Many motorcycle apps have social features that allow riders to connect with others in the motorcycle community. This can include forums, group rides, event listings, and the ability to share routes or experiences.
SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Weather Updates: Some motorcycle apps provide real-time weather updates, which can be crucial for planning rides and avoiding inclement weather. Fuel and Expense Tracking: Apps can help riders keep track of fuel expenses and mileage. This can be useful for budgeting and for planning longer trips. Route Planning and Sharing: Many apps allow riders to plan routes in advance, often with features that let you customize the type of roads you prefer. You can also share your routes with other riders or save them for future reference. Gear and Accessories Shopping: Some apps have integrated online stores where riders can shop for motorcycle gear, accessories, and parts. This can be convenient for finding and purchasing the equipment you need. Rider Statistics and Analytics: Certain apps can track and analyze your riding habits, providing insights on factors like speed, distance, and even lean angles on turns. This information can be valuable for improving your riding skills. Insurance and Documentation: Some apps allow you to store important documents like your motorcycle registration, insurance, and license digitally. This can be a handy backup in case you forget or lose your physical copies. Event and Ride Planning: Many motorcycle apps have features that allow users to find and join group rides, as well as discover motorcycle-related events and meetups happening in their area. Overall, motorcycle apps can enhance the riding experience by providing tools and resources that cater specifically to the needs and interests of motorcyclists. They can help riders plan and execute safer, more enjoyable journeys.

Importance of Motorcycle Lighting | New Ciro Products

Importance of Motorcycle Lighting | New Ciro Products

In this episode, we discuss the importance of motorcycle lighting and being seen.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists who are conspicuous are under-represented in crashes. A common complaint of street riders is that other motorists fail to observe them. Motorists who violate motorcyclists’ right-of-way frequently state, “I didn’t see him,” or “He came out of nowhere”.  A variety of recognized tactics exists to make motorcycles and their riders more conspicuous: lighting, surface color and size, and rider traffic strategy.  Using the high beam of a motorcycle’s headlight during the day also helps to prevent violations of the motorcyclist’s right-of-way,
SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Headlight modulators, which cause the light to alternate between a higher and a lower intensity during the day, also increase conspicuity.  Many modern street bikes are equipped with position running lamps in their front and/or rear turn signals. This may help other motorists to identify the vehicle as a motorcycle and to better judge its distance and speed.  Few motorcycles have more than single-point rear lighting, though multiple lights at the rear would seem to offer similar benefits and also provide redundancy for the single taillight.
CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Motorists are often distracted by items within their vehicles including cell phones.  Lighting and lights that modulate such as offerings from Ciro 3D help grab motorist attention.

Harley-Davidson Screamin' Eagle Stage 1 Upgrade | HD Pro Street Tuner vs Vance and Hines FP4

Harley-Davidson Screamin' Eagle Stage 1 Upgrade | HD Pro Street Tuner vs Vance and Hines FP4

    Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com
Did you buy a new Harley-Davidson and want to know if you should use a Vance and Hines FP4 tuner or a Screamin' Eagle Pro Street tuner?  Well, you are in luck.  We recently installed Harley-Davidson Screamin' Eagle stage 1 intakes, exhausts, and Pro Street Tuners on two police Electra Glides for a local police agency.  Before I get into the tuner debate, let me tell you what Harley-Davidson intake and exhaust were chosen.  The agency decided to go with all Harley-Davidson parts.  They went with the Screamin’ Eagle Ventilator Air Cleaner Kit and the Screamin' Eagle High-Flow Exhaust System with Street Cannon Mufflers.
The exhaust headers are made of stainless steel and are much lighter than the stock headers.  The difference in weight is very noticeable.  The heat shields attach to mounts that are secured to the headers with the typical hose clamp with a bolt through the heat shield.  While the resulting look isn't as clean the installation is much easier.
SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Vance & Hines has now released an alternative EPA compliant EFI tuner, the Fulepak 4. It can do all the same things as its little brother, the Fuelpak 3. The difference is that the only cams you'll be able to tune for are EPA compliant cams.  And, that list of compliant cams will be added to over time within the Vance & Hines Fulepak 4 smartphone app. At the time of this article, they are supporting the Harley-Davidson 447 & 462 Screamin' Eagle EPA compliant cams.  If you're just installing an intake and exhaust, certainly the Vance & Hines Fuelpak 4 is capable of that. Based on my experience, I'd definitely use the Vance and Hines Fuelpak 4 EFI tuner rather than the Screamin' Eagle Pro Street Tuner and I'll explain why.
CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! First, my personal experience tuning two police Harley-Davidson Electra Glides was not very good. Because Harley's Screamin' Eagle EFI tuner app is so glitchy, it made auto tuning the motorcycle very frustrating. I was finally able to tune the bikes after several attempts and then get it all uploaded into the motorcycle. I likely won't have to tune these bikes again and I don't even want to get back into the SE tuner via the app because it was such a bad experience. Just head over to the Harley Screamin' Eagle EFI tuner app for yourself and see the 2-star rating and all the negative written reviews. Also, go to the Harley SE Pro Stree Tuner product page and read the reviews.  The comments are all true and you'll experience all the issues you read.
Second, if you get the Screamin' Eagle Pro Street Tuner you'll forever be stuck within the Harley-Davidson ecosystem. That means you'll have to buy only Harley intakes, headers, pipes, cams etc. Whereas, with the Fuelpak 4, you'll have access to all of the same Harley's components along with other aftermarket exhaust, intakes, and cams. I say, keep yourself open with a Vance & Hines Fuelpak 4 from the Law Abiding Biker Store so you always have the option to install other aftermarket components and tune your motorcycle. And, the Fuelpak 4 is only $9 more than the SE tuner.

We've Moved Into The New Store Building | Official!!!

    Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com
In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch and we give an update on the Law Abiding Biker Store We moved the Law Abiding Biker Store from Richland, WA to Union Gap, WA in June of 2023.  Rick "Big Daddy Kane" and Brian "Goat" White ran the store successfully out of Richland for years.  We can't thank them enough for their awesome work.  The plan was always to bring the Law Abiding Biker store up to the Yakima, WA area.  That plan came to fruition this year.
We were fortunate enough to purchase a building in Union Gap, WA that is right on Main Street.  It's a great location for several reasons; it's centrally located between my house and Lurch's house, it has quick freeway access, and it's near shipping companies.  The address for the Law Abiding Biker Store is 3302 Main Street, Union Gap, WA 98903.
SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The building had good bones but it was due for some much-needed love.  We stripped out all the old technology and added up-to-date communications, security, and operations technology.  We brought the electrical and plumbing up to date.  The interior of the side occupied by the Law Abiding Biker Store was pained by Bob Dawson's Custom Painting.  Bob is a long-time Patreon supporter of Law Abiding Biker.  He did an outstanding job!  Check him out if you're in the greater Yakima, WA area and need some painting done.
CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! We are still carrying all of the products and brands you're used to seeing in our store.  We are working to expand the line of products we offer.  The larger brick-and-mortar facility will help us get into some of the larger distributors that still require a physical store to become one of their dealers.  As a reminder, the store is open when we are there working on it and shipping.  The best policy is to make an appointment was us to make sure are there.  You can contact us at sales@lawabidingbiker.com.

If not for internet in topic would have moved on

50 minutes in and have not discussed anything but pricing and difference of mounts.

I really hope the rest of the shows aren’t like this one. Incessant apologies for not having it together due to time of day during first hour. Who cares! Get to the topic. Twenty minutes on pricing of Dynojet product with nothing about Vance and Hines product, why? Thundermax explained more than Dynojet in first hour and not even part of show topic. Zero technical discussion about Vance and Hines in first hour at all except the name. Quit rambling.
I know the show is ten years old but I’m learning about tuning and if not for my desire to learn from everywhere I would have moved on because frankly you sound like idiots on this show. This is the first time listening to LAB podcast and topic alone kept me listening. I hope other shows are more professional.

Great show

Would be nice to get into topic quicker for sure. Long time listener enjoy the show and videos thanks for the entertainment and information makes the commute go much better. Thanks for all the hard work you put in.

Good info

Great podcast and info once you get to it. It’s fairly annoying having to scroll through the first 10-20 min of the episode to get to the actual content though. Maybe some people enjoy the ads and banter and small talk for 15 min before the actual subject is breached but I find it annoying. A time stamp for when the episode actually starts would be helpful at least.
