What to do with Sin – 4 – Testify about Sin

As we have been talking about what to do with sin. We are sinful people. We live in a sinful world. It would be great if all of us surrendered to Christ completely and never sinned again, but that has not been the track record of Christianity through the centuries since Christ ascended, sent the HS and started the church.

We must confess, we must forgive, we must move forward with grace, and we must testify about sin. If we sweep sin under the rug and just ignore it, then we are setting ourselves and future generations of believers up for failure. We can never pretend it didn’t happen. But we must be very careful in how we talk about it!– We must never glorify the sin.– We must express the consequences of the sin clearly so that others will avoid the sin.– We must give God glory for rectifying the sin that cause so much damage!

    Scripture: Psalm 51:1-19

There are 5 ways that David talks about his sin and testifies about what is needed for things to be made right again!

Points:1. David testifies about God’s willingness to forgive sins!2. David testifies of his sin!3. David testifies of his desire to be made whole!4. David testifies of God’s restoration from sin!5. David testifies of the proper order of things!

    Ending:

We can never forget the power of testifying about what God has done in your life.

James 5:16Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

What to do with Sin – 3 – Move Forward with Grace

We have been talking about forgiveness and it is a double-edged sword that we must be so careful in wielding. Forgiveness can save us, or it can condemn us! We love to plead for the grace, mercy, and forgiveness of Christ, but it is perhaps the most difficult thing we will ever be called to do in this life is to freely offer grace, mercy and forgiveness to someone who has sinned against us. And as we talked about last week, if we deny those who have sinned against us the forgiveness that Christ calls us to give, then we deny the forgiveness of Christ in our own sins. It is a very hard thing to navigate and work through! So, let’s give everyone here the benefit of the doubt. Let’s say that on April 7th, every person here that had sin in their life confessed it to the Lord, repented of it, and genuinely is trying to live apart from sin. And let’s just say that last week, everyone here truly cried out to God and asked for God to help them get to the point where they can begin to forgive someone who has sinned against them. Now what? The truth is that through the power of the HS we must move forward with grace. Well that sounds good Pastor, but what exactly does that mean? This morning, I want to share an amazing passage of scripture with you as we teach on moving forward with grace. Turn with me to…

    Scripture: 2 Corinthians 2:5-11

Points:1. There always has been and always will be sin in the church!2. But sin must be opposed!– Galatians 6:1-2– Matthew 18:153. Refusing forgiveness gives Satan a foothold!

    Ending:

Grace is a must. Moving forward is a must. You can’t cling to the past. Everything we do is a testimony of what Christ has done in us! And everyone is watching. Everyone is witnessing what’s going to happen if they sin. We are testifying about Christ with every word and every action towards others.

What to do with Sin – 2 – When the sin is against you.

Last week, we started our new series on what to do with sin. We appropriately talked first about the need for us as Christians to confess and repent of our sins! We must make sure that in our lives there is no sin that is present and undealt with so that we can be in good standing with our God and Savior.

Today, we are moving on in this discussion of what to do with sin by talking about what to do when the sin is against you. Just as everyone of us are guilty of our own sins, there isn’t a single person in this room that has not been scarred, hurt, traumatized, or just experienced the negative consequences of another person’s sin. Their sin may not have been directly against you, but it very much impacted your life.

And some of you have been sinned against in the vilest of ways. Someone else’s sin has impacted your life in a way that can never be undone. In some ways you feel that the sin that was against you has ruined parts if not most of your life.

And the weight of that sin is heavy when it is from someone who is not a follower of Christ. But the weight of the sin of a Christian seems to be infinitely more unbearable. There is something about the sin of a brother or sister in Christ that scars us so much more because we are acutely aware that the sin absolutely should not be committed by those people!

    So, what do we do?

    Scripture: Colossians 3:12-15

    Points:

    1. God chose you!

    2. You must choose!

    3. Forgiving others is part of the deal!

    – “13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”

    – Matthew 6:14-15

    4. Forgiveness will not come easy!

    – Luke 17:3-4 3

    – Ephesians 4:31-32

    Ending:

Forgiveness will certainly be one of the most difficult things that we will ever be called to give as a Christian. And how appropriate is it for us to experience the difficulty of it so that we can understand why we shouldn’t take the forgiveness of Christ for granted.

    – 1 Peter 4:7-8

Make no mistake about it this morning. You are called to forgive. It is a must! And the forgiveness that you are called to give others isn’t for them. It is for you! You cannot be made whole, you cannot be at peace, you cannot be holy and accomplish the callings on your life as a Christian without offering forgiveness to those who sin against you. You cannot receive forgiveness unless you forgive those who sin against you.

It won’t come quickly, but it is something that you should seek with all your heart. Ask for God to give you an outpouring of the HS so that you can bring yourself to forgive. You don’t have to be friends with that person. But you can forgive them and live in harmony with them when you have to.
