A podcast better than most biographies I’ve seen. I only disagreed with one thing and felt like Maria was too hard on herself and others. If people want to speak Spanish in the US, that’s fine. If people want to speak English in Mexico. That’s fine too. Languages are hard. People shouldn’t be hard on themselves or others.

Like her Selena podcast, Maria have light to a cultural icon deep in our Mexican roots. Love the story telling. Thank you for sharing your story and vulnerability.

I’m not sure why folks don’t read the about section. This is a podcast about going back to your roots with Juanga as a guide. This is a moving, personal, creative, and inspiring podcast. There are very few podcasts that are personal, artistic, and educational, this one is all 3.

Literal definition of cringe

I grew up with the magnificent Juan Gabriel. His contribution to Latino culture (if there is such a thing) is incalculable. My grandmother’s favorite song was Amor Eternal. We played it at her funeral. Mine is Asi Fun. I love the way Maria weaves her own story and the story of Juan Gabriel together. I too am queer. Thanks to this podcast I appreciate Juan Gabriel more than ever. This is a beautiful podcast. I enjoyed it immensely. I do wish she had not referred to Juan Gabriel as "Juanga." Growing up I only heard him called Juanga as a pejorative to emphasize and make fun of his homosexuality. Maria, why do you call him Juanga?. I really want to know.

I shared this series with friends and family. As a child of a Mexican immigrant not raised close to extended family and near Mexican culture, I missed out on learning about many things. But thankfully I was able to grow up listening to Juan Gabriel because of my mom. I loved learning about his life, growing in understanding and connection to the culture.

Overly dramatic and scandalizing about things that could be told more directly. I like the interweaving of narratives - but my god, how many times do you have to do a build up the story by saying this toootally changes the way we see something?

I absolutely loved this podcast. I listened to it because Juanga was a big part of my upbringing and my adult life. What I got out of this podcast was so much more than just learning about his life but how meaningful his life was/is to so many Latines. It touches on culture, identity, belonging, classism, assimilation, humanity. I cried multiple times throughout and also laughed and smiled throughout. I found it healing in an unexpected way. So grateful I stumbled across this podcast

Not much on Juan Gabriel lots about the podcaster. A bit too self-indulgent IMO. The Junaga info was good but was basically just sprinkled in.

This podcast program was not necessary. It was neat to take in JuanGa’s lore. But that experience was relatively short and anecdotes were few in between the story of the actual subject, the podcaster. The show description doesn’t hide the ball. But listening to an ad about this show on another, and being invited to listen to a podcast about the life of JuanGa only to be saturated with the experiences of a random literary professional who is in denial about being in the closet and elongates every eighth syllable, peeved me. Probably because I’m being accosted by that experience already—my own. Why would Apple think I think I’d find living through that again through someone’s eyes interesting? The only redeemable episode was Lilly’s.
