1921 - One Hundred Years Ago
Events 100 years ago have nothing at all to do with today's events, unless you consider new technologies changing the pace of life, the immigration issue, a new administration changing messaging and policies, racism and racial violence, crime, labor struggles, international conflicts and government spending on the poor.
(Music by Paul Whiteman band (from 1921) and Lee Rosevere )
This is William Rufus King w/ Thomas Balcerski - The Forgotten VP, His Role in The Compromise of 1850, His Relationship with James Buchanan and More
The 13th Vice President of the United States remains obscure. Where King's name does come up, it's often with the wrong picture. Or he's confused with Rufus King. According to our guest, Thomas Balcerski, Associate Professor of History at Eastern Connecticut University, he should be in the discussion. Balcerski is author of Bosom Friends: The Intimate World of James Buchanan and William Rufus King (Oxford University Press, 2019). We get into the Presidential Ratings Game too.
Required Listening :)
Stumbled across this some time ago and it has become one of my favorite pods. I am amazed how each episode well researched, timely and most importantly reflective. Bruce has a wholely unique ability to detail history to connect those events, times and circumstances to today's reality. Thank you for doing great work & godspeed.
History podcast that portrays liberals more favorably than conservatives
This podcast is decent at times, but just know there is no doubt they favor liberals over conservatives. It pretends to be objective, but it is not.
I love American history. I have rarely heard someone as well informed as Bruce, and who presents his stories in plain English. I don’t always agree with some his commentary, but that doesn’t take away from the show. He seems like a guy that you could have a beer with and discuss history. Keep it up.
