The body lay still, a single gunshot wound to the chest. Detective Lila Moss surveyed the scene, her keen eyes taking in every detail of the luxurious penthouse. The victim, renowned businessman Marcus Goldstein, had been found by his wife, Emma, who now sat in the living room, visibly shaken.
Lila approached Emma, her voice gentle yet firm. "Mrs. Goldstein, I know this is difficult, but I need to ask you a few questions. When did you last see your husband alive?"
Emma's voice trembled as she spoke. "Last night, before I went to bed. He said he had some work to finish up in his study."
Lila nodded, making a mental note. She turned to the uniformed officer nearby. "Have the crime scene techs found anything unusual?"
"No, ma'am," the officer replied. "No signs of forced entry, and the murder weapon is missing."
Lila's brow furrowed. She made her way to Marcus's study, where she noticed a safe hidden behind a painting. It was slightly ajar. Inside, she found a single item: a business card for a private investigator named Jack Reeves.
Intrigued, Lila called the number on the card. Jack agreed to meet her at a nearby coffee shop. When he arrived, Lila wasted no time. "Mr. Reeves, I found your card in Marcus Goldstein's safe. Why would he have hired you?"
Jack sighed. "He wanted me to investigate his business partner, Victor Lynch. Marcus suspected Victor of embezzling company funds."
Lila's mind raced. She thanked Jack and returned to the penthouse, where she confronted Victor. "Mr. Lynch, I have reason to believe you were stealing from your own company. And when Marcus found out, you silenced him."
Victor's face paled. "I... I didn't kill him! I swear!"
Lila's gaze fell on Emma, who had been listening intently. "No, he didn't. But you did, didn't you, Mrs. Goldstein? You discovered your husband's plan to expose Victor, and you couldn't bear the thought of losing your lavish lifestyle. So, you shot him and framed Victor."
Emma's composure crumbled. "He was going to ruin everything!" she cried. "I had no choice!"
As Emma was led away in handcuffs, Lila couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness. Another case closed, but at what cost?
