    Welcome to FractureLine: the official weekly news feed from the Chest Wall Injury Society, where we will listen to all the bottom-line CWIS updates, shout-outs, fun facts, and weekly banter! This week, we are joined by the usual suspects: Dr. Kryskow, Dr. White, SarahAnn, Aaron Pugh, Dr. Bauman, & Carl Hanson. We are also happy to introduce a new name to the rib fracture/chest wall trauma circle, Mr. Jonathan Henglein, PA-C. Jonathan is a 20-year PA with lots of experience in trauma and a recent article in The Journal of Surgical Research titled: "A Comparison of Scoring Systems to Identify Patients at Increased Risk From Traumatic Rib Fractures." Jonathan currently works for Southside Hospital (part of Northwell Health on Long Island) which recently attained Level 1 status, a huge accomplishment! Come and stay a while! Finally, this week's Summit Recap special guest is Max van Diepen (Rotterdam, Netherlands - MD/PhD Candidate). He is well known in the CWIS circle for his work thus far and will, no doubt, add greatly to the work of the Chest Wall Injury Society!

    Welcome to FractureLine: the official weekly news feed from the Chest Wall Injury Society, where we will listen to all the bottom-line CWIS updates, shout-outs, fun facts, and weekly banter! This week, we are joined by a BRAND NEW FractureLine Family Member, Mr. Aaron Pugh, PA-C. He has been a part of the Intermountain family for many years and comes into this association with much to offer! We are fortunate to have him. We also are joined by Dr. Kyle Schmitt (Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, CWIS Case Review Co-Lead with Dr. Bradley Faliks)! Dr. Schmitt reviewed the 2024 Case Review highlights and offered thoughts about where we will go in the new year.  To round out the holiday season, we also took the time to discuss (in-depth) the team's favorite yearly wintery offering, Eggnog (including the best way to enjoy it).   Cozy up next to the fire and tune into your favorite rib podcast!   Finally, this week's Summit Review features Dr. Jose Diaz, Division Chief Acute Care Surgery, University of South Florida, and a giant in the rib plating sphere. We were lucky enough to sit down and talk about his thoughts on where rib fracture management started and where we will see it go.

This week's episode welcomes back the team, including SarahAnn Whitbeck, Dr. White, Dr. Bauman, & Dr. Mark Kryskow. We welcome first-time FractureLine guests and soon-to-be-members (hopefully): Drs. Cate Cameron (Jamieson Trauma Institute, Metro North Health, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Herston, QLD, Australia) & Fran Williamson (Trauma Service, Metro North Health, Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital, Herston, QLD, Australia) to discuss their hot off-the-press article "Community opioid dispensing after rib fracture injuries: CODI study." Their study took place as a retrospective look at their community between 2014 and 2015 and has brought many interesting trends/findings to light. We also discussed proper etiquette for the gift-giving season and so much more! It is a holly-jolly time!  We also continue with the Summit reflections, and this week, we will be joined by Dr. Ron Gross, CWIS stalwart and deservedly retired Luminary of the Chest Wall Injury Society!

This week's episode welcomes back the team, including SarahAnn Whitbeck, Dr. White, Dr. Bauman, & Dr. Carl Hanson. This is a special week as we approach Thanksgiving! As a special subject this week we discussed a product of our choice which we would recommend given the approaching holiday gift-giving season. We also discussed our thoughts/predictions on what we would like CWIS to focus on and what it can do to stay fresh and ahead of the curve.  It's a turkey of a time!  We have also re-introduced the Summit reflections and this week will be Dr. Zachary Warriner, CWIS stalwart and Trauma/Critical Care surgeon at the University of Kentucky!

    Movember Musings, Funding Fractures, & CWIS Volunteerism

This week's episode welcomes back the team, including SarahAnn Whitbeck, Dr. White, Dr. Kryskow, & Dr. Bauman. During November, we have had a push to "Fund The Future of Fractures," the yearly push to raise money to help support our budding chest wall surgeons! All donations are welcome and help keep us growing and learning! We also spoke about all of the education coming up in the next few weeks and hold on because there is a lot of it! Finally, it is that time of year again...Movember...when we produce those beautiful upper lip caterpillars for men's health, and the FractureLine team continues not to disappoint!! Join the fun!

This week's episode welcomes back the team, including SarahAnn Whitbeck, Dr. White, Dr. Kryskow, Dr. Bauman, and Dr. Carl "Big Face Carl (BFC)" Hanson. We have been away for almost a MONTH (!!!), so we are back in style with lots to discuss! Some of the team recently attended CAMIT (Curso Avanzado de Mínima Invasion Toracica) in Mexico City. Submissions for CWISummit 2025 also recently closed and we broke the record for the number! Finally, it is that time of year again...Movember...when we grow those beautiful upper lip caterpillars for men's health, and the FractureLine team doesn't disappoint!!     FL Talks Tube Thoracostomy Timing With Drs. Schubl & Nahmias

    Welcome to FractureLine: the official weekly news feed from the Chest Wall Injury Society, where we will listen to all the bottom-line CWIS updates, shout-outs, fun facts, and weekly banter! This week's episode welcomes Drs. Jeffry Nahmias, MD & Sebastian Schubl, MD FACS (Trauma & Critical Care Surgery, University of California Irvine [UCI]). Dr. Nahmias is the director of the SICU for UCI & Dr. Schubl is the director of medical operations for UCI and a CWIS Stalwart. These two have been working on and recently published their article in Injury (9/23/24), "Effects of post rib plating tube thoracostomy output on the need for thoracic re-intervention: Does the volume matter?" This article is an excellent resource for the ever-present question: is there a magic number for chest tube output before it is pulled that helps prevent the need for replacement or re-intervention?! The answer may very well surprise you! We were joined by SarahAnn Whitbeck, Dr. White, Dr. Kryskow, & Dr. Bauman joined us. Come dive in!

This week's episode welcomes Dr. Babak Sarani, MD, FACS, FCCM (George Washington University Hosptial & CWIS President) & Dr. Fred Pieracci, MD (Denver Health, Denver, CO & Previous CWIS President). These two have been working on and recently published their article in JTACS (8/22/24) "Contemporary management of patients with multiple rib fractures: What you need to know." This article is the next in line as part of the JTACS series on foundational topics that every surgeon (chest wall enthusiastic or otherwise) should know! It is likely still available for free viewing and download! As always, SarahAnn, Dr. White, & Dr. Bauman joined us. Come dive in!
