We Are Learning From You Nits'áá'dóó ídahwiil'aah

Nits’áádóó ídahwiil’aah meaning “We are learning from you” recognizes the diversity of researchers, academics, medicine peoples, leaders, parents and grandparents that have shaped the Navajo people's knowledge system. Diné College is the Navajo people's institution of higher learning and through this fellowship, we are bringing our knowledge holder's home. We create this space for a monthly podcast to share the knowledge that is being generated by our fellows and knowledge holders to educate, inspire and strengthen our people's understanding of our world, our selves, and our great Navajo Nation. Support comes from both the Diné College's School of Arts & Sciences and the Mellon Foundation.

    Hane’tonomy – Stories shape our autonomy

    In our seventh podcast, Dr. Renae Watchman describes her conceptualization of Diné and Dene traditional stories in orature and film, through her book, “Restoring Relations Through Stories: from Dinétah to Denendeh”. Her work offers a map for restorying that resists inauthentic and misappropriated stories of the Diné and Dene. Watchman describes her return home to share this beautiful book that shows how Indigenous narratives are tied to land and relations.

    In our sixth podcast, Dr. David Wilkins shares his memories and experience of publishing his 1987 Diné Bibeehaz’áanii: A Handbook of Navajo Government. This book was originally published by Navajo Community College Press which grew to become The Navajo Political Experience currently in being revised for its 5th edition since its last publication in 2013. Wilkins describes the impact of the press on his early career and the missed opportunities of publications once it shut down.

    In our fifth podcast, our interview with Dr. Jennifer Nez Denetdale, as the first-ever Diné to earn a Ph.D. in history, she discusses her book, Reclaiming Diné History: The Legacies of Navajo Chief Manuelito and Juanita, which set the standard for Diné histories and methodologies. Dr. Denetdale deconstructs past research and pushes for a process to remap and reclaim our territory, historical and cultural knowledge.

    The Misfortune of Bilagáana Economics Upon Navajo

    In our fourth podcast with Professor Ezra Rosser, we discuss economic development on the Navajo Nation and the colonial structural impacts upon their land has stunted the Navajo people’s access to wealth. The Neo-classical theories do not easily capture the marginalized realities of the Navajo government’s economic development initiatives. Rosser describes how bilagáana (white person) policy, coupled with limitations on the recognition of the value of the reservation, have made economic development difficult.

The book consists of eight chapters by contributing authors: Mario Atencio, Shawn Attakai, Wendy Shelly Greyeyes, Rex Lee Jim, Manny Loley, Jonathan Perry, Jake Skeets, and Jennifer Jackson Wheeler. Dr. Lee summarizes their contributions of their work and their background. He frames the unique differences across Navajo Nation as a United Nations.

For our first podcast, we wanted to open with the Diné College leaders, President Dr. Charles “Monty” Roessel and the School of Arts and Humanities Dean Dr. Karla Britton to discuss the purpose and background for Nits’áá dóó ídahwiil’aah fellowship and returning our scholars home.
