Order and Chaos with Shane Norwood - A celebration of the order and chaos in all of our lives!

My name is Shane Norwood. I am a former police officer, with 20 years of experience in law enforcement. During my career, I had the distinct pleasure of working a wide array of assignments from patrol, K9, SWAT, field training officer, school resource officer and many others.

Like thousands of other officers throughout the world, I witnessed unspeakable horror and tragedy. Images of murder victims, grotesque and bloody crimes scenes, mangled and burned bodies, and more dead children and babies than I would like to recall, are seared in to the fabric of my mind. The taste of brain matter while attempting to give CPR to a small child with a crushed skull and the odors of burnt and decomposing bodies are just as active in my senses in this moment as the day they were first witnessed. I know countless colleagues who suffer in like manner.

Early in my career, I began experiencing night terrors, periods of uncontrollable and inexplicable sadness and despair, and an overall feeling of hopelessness. These feelings had grown in intensity with each passing year of my career, but were especially evident and debilitating during my time as a child sexual assault investigator. After suffering a serious injury to my gun hand during a confrontation with a violent suspect, I soon found myself home on full disability, not knowing if I would ever recover physically to be able to return to work. Now, plagued with severe physical pain, on top of the emotional and mental pain I had experienced for many years, I sank deeper and deeper in to a pit of depression and high-risk choices. I self-medicated with alcohol, in increasing amounts, in order to stop the night terrors and the depressed thoughts. But things only got worse, and soon I hit rock bottom.

Ultimately, I researched local therapists and was open to cognitive behavioral therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) treatment. As a result, I am the best version of myself. While I still struggle with the same issues we all struggle with on a daily basis, my mind is capable to process these events in a "normal," healthy manner.

In order for my experiences and loss to not be in vain, I hope to use this podcast as a means for others to come aboard, talk about mental health, or not, and provide insight in to our own unique issues, struggles and ways of coping.

This podcast is NOT just for law enforcement officers! We will cover a wide variety of topics, and enjoy conversations with guests from all walks of life! I can promise this - there will be a little bit of order, and a little bit of chaos, in every episode - no matter the topic! Thank you very much for stopping by - and enjoy the show!

Trade-in Your Crutch For a Chisel | Short Order Episode 1

Trade-in Your Crutch For a Chisel | Short Order Episode 1

Elite bowhunter and endurance athlete Cameron Hanes recently released a book entitled “Endure.” It was so good, I finished it in 2 days. In it, he talks about trading in your crutch, your excuse, your reason why shit won’t work out - for a chisel. Instead of allowing yourself to get by with excuses, force yourself to carve out your dreams, goals and desires with a chisel. It’s simple - yet profound…

Call Yourself Out on Bull$hit and Lies

Call Yourself Out on Bull$hit and Lies

I am a subject matter expert on creating excuses, lies and bullshit.

I make excuses why things won't work out.

    I find reasons I won't be successful.

I sabotage opportunities due to fear of failure.

I wasn't always this way - and I am committed to change. In this episode, I share my experiences and methods of calling myself out on bullshit and lies I like to tell myself. Hopefully, you'll get something out of it which will help you do the same.

The Dark Place Where Our Demons Dwell

The Dark Place Where Our Demons Dwell

As I was preparing to record this episode, I saw a friend's Instagram post - a young deputy and former Army Ranger took his own life.

It is a tragedy - and sadly, a preventable one.

Our first responders, military personal and those who have suffered or been exposed to the extreme trauma risk succumbing to the lies our internal demons convince us of.

    You are worthless...

    You are a failure...

The world would be better off without you...

When the demons have their way - the lies they tell have deadly consequences.

In this episode, I reflect on the death of this deputy - and how I face the same fate eye to eye...

    I Was Wrong | 2 Minute Tuesday 09/14/2021

I don't know about you, but sometimes saying the phrase, "I was wrong" is so much harder than to say "I am sorry." In this episode, I give my quick thoughts on my personal struggles with ego and admitting when I am wrong.

Be a 9/12 American | United We Stand, Divided We Fall

Be a 9/12 American | United We Stand, Divided We Fall

For those who were fortunate enough to experience 9/12/01, you know it was a day of transformation. Albeit short-lived, the bickering and disagreements that are the norm for any functional society nearly ceased. On that day, and many days that followed, most Americans set aside their difference, and came together - a truly united, United States.
Only 20 years after 9/11, our nation is in utter chaos. The American flag, by some, is seen as a symbol of hate. The enormous good our beautiful Republic has spread throughout the world is discarded - and all focus is on the mistakes of the past.
If we could deteriorate to this degree in only 20 years, what will this nation look like in 20 more years? It is up to us - We The People - to either come together in support of the blood-bought freedom we enjoy - or, lose it forever.
I certainly hope we do not need another 9/11 to bring us together once again... and, I fear not even an act of terror so horrific could heal the internal hemorrhaging we are experiencing. We must find a way to bring 9/12 back again. Each and every one of us must commit to be a 9/12 American. Or, I fear, our Republic is doomed.

Great content on the pulse of an important public conversation

Shane’s feel for compelling content combined with great production yield a high impact podcast, with a significant amount of info and insight in relatively short episodes.

The range of format from episodes on personal experience to others based on a reading is nice as well.

SKV1022 ,

Outstanding

Shane provides a heartfelt detailed chain of events which led him down a dark path of pain. He has turned his journey into a passionate plea to help others. Pure bravery sharing his story, a story that should be heard by law enforcement around the country. A story that could quite literally save someone’s career, family and life. Thank you Shane and keep this going!
