    183. Worthiness Wounds Part 1: The Conditioning

In this Worthiness Wounds series, I’ll be speaking specifically to men and the worthiness wounds I’ve observed. A worthiness wound is the wound of shame and never feeling good enough, believing you have to do or be something more to be worthy. It’s not your fault if you resonate, but you’re the only one who can heal them, and I’m showing you how.

Learn about the conditioning men receive that creates worthiness wounds and the types of results they produce. Hear why you’ll continue to feel empty if you’re chasing external accomplishments as a way to heal, how these types of wounds create buffering activities, and why they hurt not only you but those you love most too.

This week’s Ask a Coach question is one many of you can probably relate to: “Does the shame I feel after slipping up and viewing porn ever really go away?”

While we can learn to move through shame in different and more useful ways, I don’t know that it’s possible to completely get rid of it. The good news is that while shame will continue to show up for us, what we can do is start developing shame-resilience. Sara’s approach is brilliantly contrarian

May I share a metaphor that keeps coming to mind as I listen to Sara’s podcast and work through her program? A skilled cold-weather driver knows that when slipping on ice, turning into the skid is the quickest way to regain control of the vehicle. Untrained drivers, however, usually instinctively turn the wheel in the opposite direction of the skid, which causes further loss of control. Every other approach I’ve taken to quit porn / lust has been turning aggressively away from the skid - and no surprise - has not worked for me. Sara’s approach is counterintuitive because it has encouraged me to turn into the challenge of embracing self-compassion, going through (rather than avoiding) my emotions, and releasing myself from shame. And it’s amazing how quickly you can actually get back in control when you do that. It’s been life changing for me.

Not only am I now going through long stretches without porn or lust, but for the first time in my life, I’m doing so confidently and I feel confident about the future. I used to panic about discussions on porn in my family and church, but now I embrace them. I used to worry about how I’d handle my kids being exposed to porn; now, I eagerly anticipate those conversations and feel completely prepared to guide them out it, if needed, using these effective tools. Thank you Sara, for equipping me with the tools and mindset that ACTUALLY WORK. You are a blessing to countless individuals and families.

Inspiring

There is power in Sara’s teachings. Not only are Sara’s teachings great for quitting pornography but they can also be applied to any of life’s challenges as well. I love this podcast.

The best I have seen

I have been listening to Sara’s podcast for about a week and a half and Sara seems to have isolated the main issue for quitting porn: emotions. When Sara talks about buffering your emotions I see it in my life and feel that Sara’s method is the best method. I plan on joining her program to learn how to implement the skills she is teaching me through her podcast.
