A weekly shiur by Dayan Levi Yitzchok Raskin, Rov of Anash in London, explores interesting Torah questions and halachic dilemmas.

The following issues are discussed by Dayan Raskin in this week’s episode:

1) After a woman converted it was realized that she was carrying a child. Is the child a Jew? [1]
2) A Kohen married a woman’s whose biological father wasn’t Jewish. May a Kohen marry their daughter?[2]
3) There is a concern regarding liquids left overnight in metal containers. Evidently, cans of drink have a plastic lining. Does that mitigate this concern? [3]
4) We line our Crock-Pot with a heat-resistant plastic liner, the cholent being placed only inside the liner. Does the Crock-Pot need to be toivelled? [4]
5) Does the abovementioned liner not present a concern of Hatmono? [5]
6) How opaque does the Mechitza in Shul need to be? [6]
7) May a Chabad House use a Sefardi Sefer-Torah on a regular basis? [7]
8) I plan to round off the corner of a garment, to avoid the need equip it with Tzitzis. How should I go about measuring the roundness of the corner?[8]
9) When walking my toddler to Shul on Shabbos, he gets tired. May I give him a backpack containing a bottle of water and some crackers? [9]

1) My two-year-old developed chicken-pox. I sent my one-year-old to a child-minder. The following night the one-year-old also has chicken-pox, as do several children that were at the child-minder. Those children had to be kept home, and the child-minder had a loss of income. Do I have financial liability for any of the above? [1]
2) Is Pinyata kosher? [2]
3) The Shulchan Oruch says to rebuke one who is learning during Chazaras haShatz. Does that mean that one is permitted to embarrass the offender? [3]
4) It is customary to look towards the Chazan when he says Birkas Kohanim. Is facing that direction sufficient or should one endeavour to see the Chazan? [4]
5) I’m having a party and I’m expecting some non-Shabbos observant Jews. I’m making cocktails with wine. Does the wine need to be mevushal? [5]
6) At Shacharis on Purim, is the Sefer Torah returned to the Oron Kodesh before the reading of the Megilah or afterwards? [6]
7) The new Chabad Kitzur Shulchan Oruch has a note to bang during the communal recital of the list of the ten sons of Homon. Is that widely followed?[7]
8) My oldest brother was born with a health-defect and he passed away after two weeks from birth. Regarding the Fast of Firstborns, am I counted as a firstborn?[8]

3)  I am saying Kaddish for my late uncle ע"ה. Since I daven slowly, I would like to daven ahead alone until Borchu, say קדיש דרבנן, and then go on with the brochos of Shema?[3]

4)  On Shabbos we don’t say Tachanun. What about the prayer said just before המפיל?[4]

5)  For the purpose of a dental implant, may one use a bone from a cadaver?[5]

6)  May one pull out teeth for aesthetic reasons? [6]

7)  Is there any issue with rolling or tucking one’s beard (according to Lubavitch minhogim), especially on a Shabbos after Mikveh? [7]

8)  What is the right way to heat up baby formula on Shabbos - either dry powder or liquid?[8]

9)  At Havdoloh we say the Brochoh on the wine. We then say two more brochos: on spices and on the flame. Is there a parallel to this, where we say a brochoh on wine etc, then say Brochos that do not "relate" to the wine - but are relevant to Havdoloh? [9]

10) Is this week’s Haftoiro affected by the fact that last Shabbos we didn’t read the Haftoiroh of Vayakhel? [10]

1)   What’s the source for the custom for women to avoid doing the laundry on Motzei Shabbos? [1]

2)  When saying Kaddish for someone who isn’t a relative, is there a [spiritual] reason that a living relative of the deceased should pay for this service?[2]

3)  At the Kiddush in our Chabad House I noticed that some of our guests tend to add pasta and Chumus to their bowl of hot cholent. Do I need to say anything?[3]

4)  For our Purim event we have hired a magician; may he perform tricks using playing cards?[4]

5)  I take my son to the swimming pool, and whilst he is enjoying his session, I wait for him in the dressing room, which has multiple cubicles. May I learn my Shiurim whilst waiting there?[5]

6)  I have a doorway whose top is dome-shaped. When placing the Mezuzah in the top third – do I measure only the straight vertical posts or should I include the ‘dome’ into the overall measurements?

8)  A pamphlet about sheitels was distributed locally, including a letter of the Rebbe זי"ע. The publisher misunderstands the letter, to say that a sheitel harms one’s פרנסה. [8]

9)  Feedback on hot water boiled by a non-Jew on Shabbos: What if a non-Jew genuinely boiled the kettle for himself; may a Jew enjoy the remaining hot water? [9]

1)  In the Sefardi Sidurim there is no שיר של יום for Shabbos. Why? [1]

4)  On Shabbos, our young child emptied the urn of hot water. Thankfully he didn’t hurt himself. May we ask a Goy to boil fresh water, of which the Goy will enjoy one cup?[4]

5)  I keep chickens in my back garden. Last night I heard the chickens screaming. This alerted me to a fox in the garden, which I chased away. Are the chickens now ספק דרוסה? Are their eggs permissible? Or: does the fact that the hens continue to lay eggs determine that they are kosher?[5]

6)  At our men’s mikva, the room where one washes hands opens to the changing room: a) Does the doorway in between make any difference (although it remains open)? b) May one say a bracha with his back to the changing room?[6]

7)   Can I donate to a Tzedoko on account of Maaser of future earnings? [7]

8)  Parev foods baked in an oven that was just now used for Pizza. Do I become milchig when eating those parev foods? [8]
