Pardon My Ignorance Episode 2: How the Gender Wage Gap Is Caused

I have always been curious as to why the gender wage gap exists. What causes it? Is there a consistent wage gap across all industries? Exactly how much do women make compared to men? To shed some light on this phenomenon, I am joined by Dr. Kirsten Cornelson, assistant professor of economics at the University of Notre Dame.

What I came to realize in the conversation is how complex an issue the wage gap is. We explore a plethora of factors that contribute to the wage gap.

    Conversation Timeline:

2:11 - Stat: Women earn $0.79 for every $1.00 a man earns. How is that figure calculated?

7:33 - How educational choices impact career trajectories

11:55 - What kinds of time demands come with jobs typically chosen by men vs. women?

17:33 - Gender assignment at an early age and how it can impact career choices later in life

25:23 - How abilities and preferences affect the labour market
33:45 - How and why the wage gap varies in certain industries
37:19 - How does the business of ‘people skills’ affect the wage gap?

39:57 - The role of discrimination in the wage gap

52:06 - Household responsibilities and the family role
1:07:26 - How broader economics would be affected by gender pay equality

    Conversation Timeline:

    2:18 - Healthcare: an overview
6:06 - Common misconceptions about healthcare
11:28 - What are the limitations of Canadian health insurance?
20:12 - Nuances of healthcare coverage in the US
