Phantom Electric Ghost Interviews Bonnie Garvin: Award-Winning Writer, Playwright and Author

How To Make Your Worst Experiences Your Best Stories

I can turn you into a writer in six weeks. It's easy because you're already a writer. You've been writing since grade school. And talking, which means you can write dialogue, too!  I've taught screenwriting for nearly two decades at America's most prominent film school, the University of Southern California. As an award-winning writer, playwright and author, I've worked and taught in the U.S. and Europe. I've also created a storytelling game currently being developed by a notable production entity. During the Covid-19 pandemic, I wanted to give adults stuck at home - like me - something creative and fun to do, whether alone or with family. The last thing I wanted to do was "teach" writing. Most professional adults don't need a writing class. They know how to write but lack the confidence to do it.  I hoped to unlock people's creativity in an unexpected and fun way. Using films and books as inspiration, the class meets on Zoom once a week for six weeks to explore different aspects of their creative voice. Because the class is limited to six people, it enables an intimate and emotionally safe environment between total strangers. The six-week class draws from every possible profession, from a UN Aid worker in Iraq to a prominent British actress.

No writers have taken the class; however, many people who've taken the class have become writers. One recent example is Alicky Sussman, who I call the Storytelling Lab "poster child." She just authored a graphic novel on grief, having never seen a graphic novel before Storytelling Lab. The Sunday Times of London recently excerpted some of her story and graphics. And she's just one of many examples. We're capable of doing so much more than they think. I'm living proof. I love sharing my origin story and my 30 years of expe we ex  rience in the movie and business to inspire others. As one student said, "It's the most fun you'll ever have on Zoom." We need to reconnect with our natural child. Have fun. Why do it if you're not having fun? Embracing that philosophy allowed me to expand my creativity. I took up painting ten years ago and have been featured in several Los Angeles exhibits. Overcoming my doubt and insecurity has allowed me to live a more emotionally fulfilling life. I want to help others do the same.
