Protecting your own financial future doesn’t make you a bad parent! Bobbi Rebell [Episode 199] Part 1 of 2

She Said / She Said

SHOW NOTES EPISODE 199

EPISODE TITLE: How investing in your kids’ financial literacy supports your own financial future & career options [Part 1 of 2]

GUEST: Bobbi Rebell

TOPIC:

There’s a lot more to making a career shift or pivot than just figuring out what you want to do next. For most of us, one particularly important consideration is: MONEY. We have to ask ourselves: “Will I have enough if I decide to take a career break,” or maybe, “will I have enough to fund a passion project that might not — at least initially — yield the same financial rewards and revenue as my previous career?”

That financial picture can be further complicated as other people enter or leave our lives, including when adult (or almost adult) kids are dependent for longer. Those decisions don’t just impact the potential life and career choices for the kids, but also for the parents.

HOW THIS TOPIC RELATES TO INFLUENCE:

Sometimes the greatest opportunity to have real influence is under our own roof. By teaching basic personal finance you’re not only helping your kids become more money savvy and gain financial independence, you’re also protecting and investing in your own future, something this week’s guest in an expert on and talks about in this conversation.

THIS WEEK’S GUEST:

Bobbi Rebell is a certified financial planner, author and business journalist. She shares her perspective on navigating career, parenting, and money choices and how she’s using her skills to help us make smarter, more thoughtful money choices that can impact us long into the future.

One quick caveat, even if you are not a parent, I think you’ll love Bobbi’s advice and career lessons.

KEY THEMES IN PART 1:

* How the current economic environment and job market are different from the one past generations have entered, and why that matters.

* How and why the “boomerang effect” has created a delay into adulthood for some, and an unanticipated financial burden for many others.

* Why helping your adult children become financially  independent (and literate) improves not only their financial future (and yours), but also their confidence

* How Bobbi considered some stages in her career, especially when she become a mom, to be an investment in her future earning or “placeholder job” and why it’s important to look at the big picture often beyond just salary and childcare

* How Bobbi laid the financial groundwork for her career pivots

* Bobbi’s shares her tips for the best way to ask someone for advice

* Why you should always ask yourself: “What sets you apart from other people?” And “What do you offer that no one else does?” And how those questions laid the groundwork for Bobbi’s first book.

KEY TOPICS FOR NEXT WEEK’S EPISODE 200 [PART 2 OF MY CONVERSATION WITH BOBBI REBELL]:

* We’ll talk about why pursuing your passion isn’t necessarily the same as pursuing your income.

* What you can learn from something Bobbi considers her biggest financial mistake.

* Why the people around you can have an outsized impact on your financial future

* How Bobbi thinks about influence.
