To kick off the season of "Why in the World?" We are pleased to interview the newest addition to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Texas in Austin, Dr. Charlie Nagle.

Professor Nagle earned his doctorate at Georgetown and is defined as a quantitative research methodologist working in the areas of second language learning, phonetics and phonology, and speech perception and production.

Why are we graduate students? Instead of looking outward for answers, we have decided to look within. The professors and faculty who are part of the Department of Spanish & Portuguese at the University of Texas at Austin have reached the highest levels and opened doors that were closed for a long time. So, why not ask them?

Noemi Segarra Ramirez is a movement artist and co-founder of artist collective PISO Proyecto who visited The University of Texas at Austin last fall. We interviewed her on foot –walking is one of her artistic practices–and learned why she situates her work at the intersection of social justice and embodied practices.

What does it take for our bodies to relate differently to people or places? In this 10-minute audio story, Noemi shares her thoughts on social justice, somatics, and improvisation techniques in the context of recent states of emergency in Puerto Rico.

Cultural, social, economic, and political forces all manifest themselves in our bodies through our posture, gestures, attention, breathing, and overall well-being. Leaning on improvisation techniques–and on each other–could assist us in the process of responding to pressing questions in rapidly changing times.

In this interview, conducted by Monserrat Madariaga, Dr. Kim TallBear talks about new avenues for critical and creative academic research, how polyamory can help deconstruct compulsory monogamy in settler-colonial states. She also discussed the ideas of indigenous belonging, questioned the assumptions of ancestry in DNA tests and much more.

"Dr. Kim TallBear is author of "Native American DNA: Tribal Belonging and the False Promise of Genetic Science" (2013) and is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Native Studies, University of Alberta. She studies the racial politics of “gene talk” in science and popular culture. A former environmental planner, she has become interested in the similarities between Western constructions of "nature" and "sexuality” as they are defined and sanctioned historically by those in power. TallBear is interested in how sex and nature can be understood differently in indigenous worldviews".

La primera semana de octubre de 2019, la poeta Mapuche Huilliche Roxana Miranda Rupailaf visitó la Universidad de Texas en Austin invitada al evento “Poetics of Body and Territory: Challenging Colonial Continuity in the 21st Century. A Mapuche-Caribbean Dialogue”* (junto con la artista puertorriqueña Noemí Segarra Ramírez). Aprovechamos la oportunidad para realizar un Pterocast con Roxana, donde nos cuenta de su biografía y su obra: el territorio que habita, su relación con el movimiento Mapuche, los cuerpos de mujeres y el erotismo en su poesía, su relación con el feminismo y su interés por el box, tema de investigación para su próximo poemario.

La entrevista se realizó dos semanas antes del estallido social en Chile (18 de oct.), una explosión de descontento por parte de chilen-s, Mapuche, migrantes e integrantes de otros pueblos indígenas, quienes protestan por un cambio estructural del modelo neoliberal-colonial del país y luchan por una vida digna. Roxana ha participado del “despertar” de Chile, escribiendo lo que sucede en clave poética y co-organizando un ciclo de poesía autogestionado y colectivo llamado “Letras en resistencia”. Este encuentro se ha realizado en la ciudad de Osorno y sus alrededores, en liceos, en plazas, en poblaciones como la toma Chaurakawin de Osorno y en la comunidad Kuifi Newen Mapunche, territorio Mapuche en recuperación.
