The ORs: The Prisoner of War Process - From Battlefield to Prison Camp

The "Rally on the Colors" Podcast returns with another episode from the ORs, this one specifically focusing on the prisoner of war process. In this episode, Bill and Steve, deep dive the process that Civil War soldiers faced from the time they were captured on the battlefield until they were incarcerated at a prisoner of war camp. In this episode you will find information specific to the Army of the Potomac and how the Provost Guard and Provost Marshal acted within their roles. The episode also includes a small segment covering the Articles of War from the Revised Regulations of the United States Army of 1861 and how those articles played a role in the prisoner of war process. This episode specifically focuses around soldiers being captured during the Gettysburg Campaign due to the Dix-Hill Cartel fallout after the Confederate Congress decided to recognize African-American Union soldiers as fugitive slaves. The episode ends by specifically focusing on the two worst camps of the War, Elmira in the North and Andersonville in the South. We hope you enjoy this episode as some of the topics near the end were difficult to discuss and walk away from this episode with a perspective about the process that soldiers went through upon being captured on the battlefield. We thank you for your continued support! Always Forward!

    The ORs: April 14th, 1865

    The ORs: April 14th, 1865

The "Rally on the Colors" Podcast returns with yet another episode from the ORs, this one focusing on the events surrounding April 14th, 1865 and how they pertain to the events in and around Washington D.C. Bill and Steve deep dive the assassination plot carried out by John Wilkes Booth, Lewis Powell, David Herold and George Atzerodt as they attempt to dismantle the leadership within the US government as they plan to kill President Abraham Lincoln, Secretary of State William Seward and Vice President Andrew Johnson. The episode steers away from the conspiracies and examines the facts, including a series of small events that all intertwine themselves in what will become the assassination of the 16th President of the United States. A follow-on episode will eventually be released that covers more detail about the conspirators, their apprehension, the subsequent military tribunal and the fallout that occurs from the assassination. We hope you enjoy this episode as we attempt to shed light on some of the often overlooked crucial details of the assassination as it gets mythicized with creative license often taken in the mainstream media when the story is told. Again, we thank you for your continued support and we thank you for listening!

The ORs: Myth and General Ulysses Grant

The ORs: Myth and General Ulysses Grant

The ORs have returned for yet another episode, this one centering around General Ulysses Grant, the future 18th President of the United States. In this episode Bill, Ty and Steve first start out with some biographical background information about Grant leading into the start of the Civil War. Grant's war record in the west is then discussed before the deep dives occur about the always debated topic of Grant vs Lee. The episode gets a unique look at the myth of "Grant the Butcher." The myth is dissected mathematically, strategically, tactically and logistically. The stopping of prisoner exchanges is also examined as it is erroneously credited to Grant; and of course the episode discusses "Grant the Drunkard." As with all of our interpretive episodes, we encourage you to think critically about the topic and formulate your own opinion. We hope you enjoy listening to this episode and walk away from it maybe with some altering perspectives.

    Reenacting 101: Getting Started

The "Rally on the Colors" Podcast returns with yet another secondary series, this one focused on Civil War Reenacting and/or Living History. In this first installment of the series titled "Reenacting 101," Bill, Ty, and Steve discuss the basics when it comes to getting started in Civil War reenacting/living history with a few occasional deep dives on several related and some unrelated topics. The episode begins with a discussion of choosing your side (i.e. Union or Confederate), picking the proper branch (i.e. Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry, etc) and then deciding what your level of authenticity will be (i.e. Mainstream, Progressive, Campaigner). Bill, Ty, and Steve then utilize a top down approach when discussing the basic requirements needed for participation from hats to uniform coats/jackets and trousers, to brogans. The necessary accoutrements are discussed pertaining to the proper leather gear and weaponry, along with haversacks and canteens, and also tinware. As each article of clothing or equipment is discussed several quality vendors are also identified to point you in the right direction with your purchases. We hope you enjoy this episode and walk away having learned something about the hobby. Thank you for listening!
