  1. Jimmy Nicholl - "I'll always be grateful to United"

Jimmy Nicholl - "I'll always be grateful to United"

Defensive stalwart Jimmy Nicholl is the latest UTD Podcast guest, as he tells some riveting stories from his time growing up at United and amassing almost 250 appearances for the Reds, between 1975 and 1981. Jimmy played for both United and Rangers who, coincidentally, take on the Reds in a pre-season friendly at Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium on Saturday 20th July. You can get your tickets here. Remarkably, after being born in Canada, his family escaped the Troubles in Northern Ireland thanks to the help of the club, with then-manager Tommy Docherty helping to arrange the move to Manchester. He puts his signing of a professional deal down to a bona-fide United legend and would go on to forge close bonds with the rest of the team. There were real highs for club and country, which he details, such as winning the 1977 FA Cup and beating hosts Spain at the 1982 World Cup with Billy Bingham’s Northern Ireland, and the partying that ensued. Jimmy explains why Ron Atkinson’s arrival proved to be the beginning of the end for him at United but he discusses his career in coaching after hanging up his boots and his current job as assistant manager to the country he served so well as a player. There is one big regret, though, for the former full-back. Find out what it is, and much more, by listening to our revealing interview. 3. Keith Hackett - Refereeing at the top

Keith Hackett - Refereeing at the top

In a first for the UTD podcast, this week we have a referee, and not just any referee, former head of referees, Keith Hackett. For this one Sam & Helen are joined by Wes Brown who is filling in for Maysie. In a career spanning from 1972 to 1994, Keith worked in the English Football League (and international football) as a linesman and referee. He refereed the 1990–91 league encounter between Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford, a match notorious for the 21-man brawl breaking out just after the hour mark. Keith also refereed his last ever match at Old Trafford, a game between United and Liverpool.  Keith later worked as a referees' assessor before, on 1 March 2004, he was appointed general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). Today Keith talks about a long career refereeing at the top level of football, his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson, as well as how the game is changing. Warning - VAR chat incoming! 4. Unheard: 1999

    Unheard: 1999

25 years ago, Manchester United made English football history, when they won the treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. With a nucleus of homegrown stars, Alex Ferguson and his team went on a remarkable 33 game unbeaten run to reach the promised land.  Where there is a true moment in time, a ‘where were you?’ moment, there is a desire to relive it. And not just relive it. To feel what it was like before it happened. To remember that anticipation. To bask in the moment and soak it in just one more time. Now you can. Narrated by Paddy Barclay, produced by Wayne Barton and using rare unheard audio from the collection of Tom Tyrrell, this episode of the Manchester United Podcast places you on May 14th, 1999, two days before the final Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur. You will hear from the players as they navigated through the following days, on the brink of history, experiencing it as it happened. This is Manchester United, on the edge of glory.  The best place to catch up on the back-catalogue of our interviews is over on the Manchester United App, where you can listen to - and watch - all of our episodes in full, for free. Here you can get early access to new episodes, published 24 hours before everywhere else.
