While it started exclusively as an activity enjoyed by a small demographic of ultra-nerdy young people with knowledge of obscure websites, emulation has gradually blossomed over the past thirty years into something we all do regularly—often while obeying copyright laws. Without emulation, most retro games would be entirely inaccessible to all but the select few with the cash available to purchase pieces of decades-old plastic that are only increasing in price and decay. And would our little podcast even exist without emulation? It's a thought too terrifying to dwell on.

This week on Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Read Only Memo's Wes Fenlon, and Zophar's Domain founder Zophar (check out his YouTube and Twitch channels) as the crew discusses the many big moments from emulation's history—and how the subject has recently become more relevant than ever.

Still a great retro gaming podcast

I think it’s great that Jeremy wanted to keep the podcast going and invited fresh voices to the table. I do think that the show is currently getting the kinks out of the new format but I think it still is an enjoyable listen.
One slightly negative thing I will say, the episodes where they talk about film are often not as good because the hosts lack the depth of knowledge on film that they have on video games.

Headed in the wrong direction

I’ve listened to the various iterations of this podcast since it’s inception, however the current lineup is increasingly dour and seem to have a very high opinion of themselves. I even support the Patreon. The most recent episode on gaming in 2004 featured a 15 minute intro on how their political leaning is better than yours. You can guess which way they lean. Stick to video game history and phase out Mackey, Gipp and the like. Jeremy has similar politics but is able to focus much more on the subject matter. He should take this back under control.
