Riff Worship

The riff is the foundation of heavy music, evolving over several decades and styles. Many of our favorite songs started with a single idea and guitar in hand. Anyone can write a riff, but what makes a good riff? Each week, riff disciples Austin Paulson, Dylan Adams, & Justin Swindle attempt to answer this question by discussing their favorite riffs, how they came to be, and why we still worship them today.

    The road to heavy metal domination has to begin somewhere, doesn’t it? Before the arenas, pyrotechnics, and leather, Judas Priest were like a lot of young bands from Birmingham, England. Hungry and determined.  Unsatisfied with the lackluster production and tepid response of their debut album, the band knew something needed to change in order for them to breakthrough.  Here, they began to sculpt their signature sound: soaring vocals, electrifying melodies, and thundering riffs. It wasn’t perfected, but it was a damn fine start.
