The Latinx Young Professionals Development Committee is part of the Latino Caucus for Public Health (http://latinocaucus-apha.org/). Our mission is to represent and advocate for the professional interests of young professionals in the Latino public health community, both within and outside the American Public Health Association. The podcast will focus on Latinos working in Public Health and their professional and personal journey as well as career advice for young professionals. The idea is that young Latinx professionals will be able to gain some insight from other Latinx professionals. Since our community has so many first-generation students/professionals, it can be difficult and lonely figuring it out on our own. This podcast will give the next generation an opportunity to hear from people forging their path through this field. It will weave together life stories with professional and academic advice. Latinos, Clinical Trials and Vaccinations: Why It Matters (Spanish: Los Latinos, los Ensayos Clínicos, y las Vacunas: Porque importa)
Join us as we hear from Claudia Pineda-Muyir, PA-C and Katya Corado, MD along with a message about Combat COVID.
Claudia Pineda-Muyir, PA-C opened her own clinic in 2020 because she wanted to provide a safe and comfortable place for Latinos seeking medical care for the uninsured and those who are not English dominant. When the pandemic hit, she refused to close her clinic because she knew that others were turning patients away. The clinic started getting overwhelming amounts of patients, and eventually had to use a ticket system to limit its intake to 100 patients per day.
Dr. Katya Corado provides primary medical care to HIV patients at the Tom Kay Clinic in the Long Beach Comprehensive Health Center, affiliated with Harbor-UCLA. Dr. Corado also teaches and participates in research at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Most recently, her research has focused on COVID-19 vaccine trials as well as treatment trials.
