Today's episode features Dr. Mary Ellen Pethel.
Dr. Pethel is an author, historian, archivist, and digital humanist. She is an Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies and Global Education at Belmont University.
Mary Ellen was a five-sport high school athlete at Rome High School in Rome, GA and played basketball at Berry College.
In 1996, she transferred to the University of Tennessee and joined the history honors program where her senior thesis (on women's sports from 1897 to 1917) won best thesis award.
While teaching and coaching tennis, softball, and basketball) at the high school level, Mary Ellen earned her Master’s degree in Education from Berry College in 2001 and began the PhD program at GA State University, graduating in 2009.
Mary Ellen completed a Post-grad certificate in Digital Humanities from George Mason University.
Prior to her appointment at Belmont, Dr. Pethel taught in the Social Science Department at Harpeth Hall School in Nashville.
Mary Ellen has written five books: Athens of the New South; A Heartfelt Mission; All-Girls Education from Ward Seminary to Harpeth Hall; and her latest book which we will be discussing today: Title IX, Pat Sumitt, and Tennessee’s Trailblazers: 50 Years, 50 Stories.
Mary Ellen has been featured on C-SPAN speaking about the 2020 Presidential Debate at Belmont University.
