Sexy & Surreal: Episode 20 - M. Butterfly (1993‪)‬ Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad

    • Film Reviews

Terry and Joe tackle another challenging Cronenberg title with the adaptation of David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly (1993).
Is this the straightest queer film ever? Although Jeremy Irons and John Lone are both doing great work, the film's reticence to engage with its gender, queer, and even political themes frustrates us to no end. By playing this realist and straight (in all senses of the word), the film is a bad marriage of director and material.
