Storytelling is a powerful tool for educating ourselves and others, and that makes it a crucial skill for transfer advocates. In today’s episode, Emily from NISTS chats with Dr. Maria Hesse to discuss sharing transfer student stories – why it’s important, things to consider, how to prepare, what to share, and, importantly, just who should do the telling.
Maria Hesse serves as a Professor of Practice in the higher education program at Arizona State University and is a member of the Tackling Transfer Policy Advisory Board. In 2019, she retired as Vice Provost for Academic Partnerships at ASU, after a decade in the position. In that role, her varied experience and leadership was instrumental in bringing the Maricopa to ASU Pathways Program to life. Prior to joining the ASU administration in 2009, Dr. Hesse served as President and CEO for Chandler-Gilbert Community College, one of the Maricopa Community Colleges. Before her 25 years in the Maricopa Community Colleges system, she was a high school principal and teacher. In 2019, Dr. Hesse was honored as the Woman of the Year by Arizona Women in Higher Education. She has also been honored with numerous other local and national awards.
