#156: I Didn’t Mean to Do That! Impulsivity and ADHD
SHINING WITH ADHD
EPISODE #156: I Didn’t Mean to Do That! Impulsivity and ADHD
The Childhood Collective
5/15/2024
SUMMARY“Why did you do that?”
“What were you thinking?”
Sound familiar?
When our kids act impulsively, it is easy for us to get frustrated and confused. We might start asking our kids why they behaved the way they did. The truth is, initially, they often don’t even know. Once everyone is regulated, it is easier to figure out what happened. As parents, we naturally want our kids with ADHD to slow down and consider their actions, but it's a challenge. It can be heartbreaking to see impulsive behavior negatively impact their social life or lead to consequences. That's why today, we’re sharing strategies to help them develop through these situations.
MEET OUR TEAMWe are Lori, Mallory, and Katie. Lori and Mallory are child psychologists, and Katie is a speech language pathologist. Most importantly, we are moms, just like you. After working with families over a combined total of 40 years, we saw a need to provide ongoing support and education to parents raising children with ADHD.

Practical, non-judgmental, and expertise-based!
I have been listening to this podcast for about a year and have recommended it to several other parents! Lori, Mallory, and Katie are kind, down-to-earth professionals and mothers whose perspective helps me feel more confident in parenting my ADHD child. As a neurotypical person myself, it is often difficult for me to understand why my child acts and struggles the way that they do, and the many expert viewpoints (and just humane, thoughtful, sensitive advice from other ADHD parents) that they provide here have really given me some valuable tools and perspective shifts that I needed. Thank you for this wonderful podcast!

I discovered this podcast thru their Tik tok. There is so much variety to listen to and they are so helpful. Thanks ladies!!!
Not Alone
This podcast has helped me so much as a mom with a kid who possibly has ADHD. I'm always sharing with my husband (who has ADHD) what I am learning each week and it has opened up great conversations between us as well. So thank you for helping provide that open communication between us. One of the last episodes I listened to interviewing Rachel Nielsen really spoke to me. Especially when Mallory?(can't remember who) got emotional about her difficult season of parenting she was in. I started crying along with her as I listened because we are not only going through our own season of difficult parenting, but I also felt so seen and not alone. Thank you for being vulnerable about your parenting journeys as it truly feels like you all understand and are walking alongside with us instead of simply giving us parenting advice. Your podcast has amazing wisdom and insight but more importantly, it has a heart for parenting kids with ADHD and I cannot say thank you enough.
