#2 - When Can Kids Start Strength Training?

#2 - When Can Kids Start Strength Training?

It's a persistent myth that strength training, or resistance training, is somehow bad for kids. "It will stunt your growth!" is an oft repeated claim, even though there is no evidence of that happening. Strength training, just like any form of exercise, is not only safe for kids, it's essential for kids. As Dan and Taylor explain, strength training can take on many forms for kids: lifting barbells and other free weights, but also bodyweight exercise. The key to making it work is scaling the exercise to the athletic ability of the trainee.

As Dan puts it, young trainees at Skan Strength are like white belts in karate -- they work on mastering basic, bodyweight exercises, progressing over time to free weights and eventually barbells. This ensures that their bodies are properly prepared for each phase of training, because there is a smooth, steady progression of load introduced over a long enough period of time for their bodies to adapt to it.

When can kids start training? Now!

#1 - Why Strength Is the Key to Healthy Aging

#1 - Why Strength Is the Key to Healthy Aging

In the first official episode of SkanStrength Radio, Coach Dan and Taylor Flanick explain why strength is so important to the process of aging. Today's aging population is riddled with chronic disease and dysfunction, but it doesn't have to be that way! You can age with grace, be independent, and be able to do the things you want to do -- like pick up your grandkids, take care of your yard, play sports -- but you will need a strong body. There's a reason that "strength" is in the name of the gym and the podcast, and Dan and Taylor will show you why.
