I have known Bill and Jen for a while now. Since moving away from the Seattle area many years ago it was great to re-connect (virtually) with them by listening to their podcast. They are so real and open about their life and how they approach all aspects of their life that I find it so refreshing and a reminder that I am not the only one who deals with all of the issues of life that I face. What you hear on the podcast is exactly what it is like if you were with them in their home, frank and wise. This is a great podcast and I hope you connect with the wisdom and strength of their life just I have! Wade

Hi! I am a long time listener and a huge fan. I should’ve left a review sooner! I just listened to your podcast on church hurt and I wanted to thank you for sharing and being vulnerable. I am someone who has experienced religious trauma and spiritual abuse. Members of the church have hugged me only to gain information, told me that my sexual abuse was my fault, and even blamed my miscarriages on my past sins. For many years I could not walk into a church without having a full on panic attack, like movie-style hyperventilating and ugly crying. I spent years crying alone and with my husband trying to figure out how to forgive. My therapist certainly had to up her Amazon tissue subscription each time she saw me. I am still a Christian, though I would say I’m also an exvangelical. I still go to church, but sometimes it’s hard to force myself when I have flashbacks. I like to pray the Lord’s Prayer and I make it a point to tell God who I am forgiving. Sometimes I am still angry, but I don’t want to be a hurt person who hurts people. Forgiving daily reminds me that I’ve also been forgiven. I don’t deserve God’s grace as much as, if not more than, those who hurt me. I’m lucky that I’ve found the right church. It took awhile to get here and many poor pastors were gruesomely grilled before I even considered a Sunday morning service. If you’re out there and you’ve experienced church hurt, there is hope, it just takes time. Jenn, you touched on something really profound when you spoke about being deceived and lied to. You said something about preferring honesty and being up front, instead of feeling deceived. This resonated deeply with me. As someone abused, but not quiet, others shared their stories with me. The church is made up of hurt people, but unfortunately we haven’t done a great job bringing abuse to light. It’s often swept under the rug which perpetuates more trauma. My opinion is if we don’t own our mistakes we can’t do better. I’d love to hear more about your thoughts on fixing the problem in your next episode. I know you both to be integrous people and pastors. Each week I listen to your podcast and you speak into my life. Thank you for continuing this journey, you make a difference.
