    Ep 4 - Sharing My Story on the Vision Alignment Show with Brian Wagner

    Ep 4 - Sharing My Story on the Vision Alignment Show with Brian Wagner

    When you learn to understand your own story and share it with other people, it has such an impact on your life.

    In this episode, I was interviewed live on LinkedIn on my friend Brian Wagner’s Vision Alignment Show. We talked about the story that led me to my passion for storytelling and helping people tap the power of their stories.

    Key Takeaways:

    Lessons learned from growing up with a hard-working single mother.
    The teacher who changed my life in a moment.
    Why I treat CEOs and frontline workers the same.
    The three most important benefits of storytelling.
    Many more insights in a fast and fun conversation.

    About my interviewer:

    Brian is the founder and CEO of "A Radical Vision."  His mission is to help people embrace their own personal blindness to achieve a greater vision for their lives. The process takes people from a point of blindness, into sight, and toward a greater vision.

    Brian was born and raised in Northwest Ohio as the son of a tomato farmer and the youngest of 10 kids. In 1977, at the age of 10, he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a brain malformation. Over the course of the next 33 years, he experienced several instances of medical issues resulting from this diagnosis.

    On March 4 of 2011, he woke up on the couch and wasn't able to see. For the next six months, he was blind. Only brain surgery and multiple eye surgeries have allowed a portion of his vision to return.

    Since then, Brian has become an author of the semi-autobiography book "Sometimes It DOES Take a Brain Surgeon".

    He uses his experiences to help his audience to improve their lives by teaching them how to see what they are missing as a result of their own blindness.

    Brian is the President of the National Speakers’ Association, Ohio Chapter.

    Ep 3 - Counter Intuitive Secrets to Boost Your Productivity With Ted Gioia

    Subscribe to:Spotify: Subscribe NowiTunes: Subscribe NowGoogle: Subscribe Now

    “The life you choose is your decision, and the only one who can change that is you.” In today’s episode, I asked my friend Ted Gioia to tell the story of his fascinating journey. He describes what it means to be an honest broker in a world of self-interested opinion.

    Ted is a jazz pianist and accomplished author. The Wall Street Journal calls him a radiantly accomplished writer, and the New York Times says Ted is thoughtful and thought-provoking. I am sure you will agree as you listen to our conversation.

    Key Takeaways:

    How building on trust, honesty, integrity over the long run enhances your position. What is the reader-centric approach, and why is it important.

    The kind of people and institutions our society needs more of. How to choose things to do that will expand your skillset and you as a person. How cultivating dissent and disagreement helps an institution. The reason Ted encouraged his team to disagree with him.

    The relationship between input and output for creativity and productivity. Ted’s way of organizing notes contributed a lot to his writing.

    About our guest:

    Ted Gioia is a jazz pianist, author of 11 books, including Music: A Subversive History (Basic Books), The History of Jazz (Oxford University Press), and Delta Blues (Norton). His books have been translated into nine languages, and two have been honored on the New York Times list of the 100 best books of the year.

    Gioia has also written for the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, San Francisco Chronicle, Smithsonian, The Daily Beast, The American Scholar, Musical Quarterly, Salon, and many other leading periodicals.

    His latest project is Culture Notes of an Honest Broker, a column and newsletter on the Substack platform. Gioia holds degrees from Oxford University and Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and previously served on the faculty of Stanford University.

    Ep 2 - How Her Simple Idea Helped 200 Million Children in Poverty with Kyle Zimmer

    Ep 2 - How Her Simple Idea Helped 200 Million Children in Poverty with Kyle Zimmer

    We all know people, including ourselves, who see a pressing need in society and say we have an idea to help solve that problem.

    But let’s face it, 99 percent of us don’t follow through. We may take some action, but when we hit the inevitable plateaus or valleys, we call it off.

    Not my friend Kyle Zimmer. She had an idea and followed through. On Wednesday, May 19th, the organization she co-founded, First Book, celebrated its 30th Anniversary and has distributed more than 210 million new books to children living in poverty.

    With her leadership, First Book developed into an award-winning nonprofit social enterprise furthering educational equity for children in poverty.

    I asked Kyle to tell her story with the hope of inspiring others who want to make a difference in the world. My editor said she found herself crying while working on this episode.

    Kyle shares insights from her inspiring journey, including:

    Why she chose a social enterprise model that uses business principles in philanthropy;
    Shocking research on the lack of books in poor neighborhoods and its impact on children’s long-term success;
    How she built and maintains a team of high-caliber leaders, who choose First Book over other opportunities to make fortunes in Silicon Valley or on Wall Street;
    and much more.

    I’ve witnessed her personal and organizational challenges over the years and I’m in awe of her intelligence, commitment, and, most of all, grit.

    On their 30th Anniversary, I’m honored to share the story of Kyle Zimmer and First Book in this inspiring conversation.
