    Success Factor: Lessons from High Achievers w/Ruth Gotian

    Dr. Ruth Gotian is the Chief Learning Officer and Assistant Professor of Education in Anesthesiology and former Assistant Dean of Mentoring and Executive Director of the Mentoring Academy at Weill Cornell Medicine. She has been hailed by the journal Nature and Columbia University as an expert in mentorship and leadership development. In 2021, she was selected as one of 30 people worldwide to be named to the Thinkers50 Radar List, dubbed the Oscars of management thinking, and recently won the Thinkers50 Distinguished Achievement “Radar” Award, ranking her the #1 emerging management thinker in the world to bridge theory and practice. She is also a semi-finalist for the Forbes 50 Over 50 list. In addition to publishing in academic journals, she is a contributor to Forbes and Psychology Today where she writes about ‘optimizing success’. Her research is about the mindset and skill set of peak performers, including Nobel laureates, astronauts, and Olympic champions, which she writes about in her book, The Success Factor. What does success look like for you and how would you define success? Certainly not the same as everyone else's but according to my guest, Dr. Ruth Gotian, she defined success as 'someone who moves the needle in their field.' Pamay: I am a lifelong-learner, I love big ideas and I love serving my community and those are some of my passions. I am the Chief Learning and Diversity Officer at the Kraft Heinz Company. Doyin: It is good to have you with us. To start with, we know that the pandemic has upended lives and work. Can you share with us the challenges you learnt during the pandemic period as it relates to work, learning and generally? Pamay: Every family, and organisation experienced the pandemic at an enormous amount. Due to this, we had to make learning virtual. We had to connect without the benefit of being in the same room or area. As a learning professional, I had to take all the courses in progress and plans we have for other organisations and form them into full virtual experiences. Certainly, it was a challenge, but my team and I decided to do things differently and we made everything into a virtual format. Personally, in times of crisis, you have to learn your superpower and determine your way through it. Decide who you want to be in that storm and that would guide the process of learning. Doyin: What should business executives focus on in helping the organisations deal with and also help their organisations emerge as a result of this pandemic? Pamay: I think that trying to focus on how to continue to produce, and how to adjust your routines to work effectively matters. One of the things we learn and would continue to learn is the importance of communication. The ability to be resilient, to determine how to practice resilience, decision making especially when you have incomplete information frankly how to manage your energy is important because we need to deliver as humans and organisations. Doyin: What is the skills gap and why should organisations care? Pamay: There are certain skills to help deliver in this world; every company, organisation or business. Research has it that there are not enough people with those skills to fill the jobs/roles. One of the aims of my company is that we champion great people and great teams are what drive the work. So, companies who are aiming to drive their aims, need people who are skilled to fill the gap. Doyin: We have identified skills and why should companies care? How about individuals? Pamay: I am passionate about helping people take ownership of their skills and development. People should care about the skills gap because it takes a belief and knowledge that you can embrace learning as your superpower and if you find yourself in a place where you are being disrupted even intentionally or unintentionally, you need to get skilled or a new job. People are looking for people who can step up into different roles to transform themselves professionally and continue to be lifelong learners. What you know today how valuable will it be tomorrow? As individuals, there is a huge opportunity if you are a learner and can embrace that. I will say I learned my way through growth and career to develop myself. Doyin: People/Scholars would also say that the short life of skill is between 1-5 years. How true or real is this when we look at it from what people do within our organisation essentially?     Top 7 Skills & Mindset To Get You Ahead in Learning and Development

    Bio Formerly the senior content manager at ATD for career development and host of the Accidental Trainer podcast, Lisa Spinelli writes about career development and pathways. She is the editor and main author of Teachers to Trainers (ATD Press) and is working toward her ACC accreditation with the International Coaching Federation as a career and transition coach. Currently, she is the director of content strategy at Degreed. Spinelli also volunteers her time outside of work coaching and assisting transitioning military service members and spouses as well as disabled entrepreneurs in their new career paths.  Transcript (Abridged) Doyin: Lisa is an extraordinary person. You are welcome to the Performance Tools Podcast. Thank you for honoring my invitation, Lisa.  Lisa: It is an honor. I have been called extra before.  Doyin: Tell us about your career journey.  Lisa: I started pretty much in journalism. I went on to travel to America to do journalism. Then, I met my wonderful Airforce husband. We started having babies and I decided to stay at home; freelancing and started doing content marketing and got into the realm of career development to help me become a coach. I just finished the program last year and I am still working towards my ACC/ICF credentials but also working on ATD development news and amazing podcasts.  Doyin: So, with the state of the world; pandemic, AI, Automation- tech and all that. How can Learning and Development professionals get ahead in their careers today putting in place all these realities around us?  Lisa: There is no area that has not been affected in the world. Everybody is being affected especially the pandemic. People are looking online towards their careers, workplaces, and hybrid and they have gone virtual. They are looking more at LinkedIn Learning, online academies where they can go into and develop their skills, especially if they are just starting off in this industry- talent development. It's a booming business I have seen, and I will caution people to do their homework on people who are running these academies and feedback from those who have gone through them. Nobody is stopping anybody from starting their own business online. But you really have to do your homework. There are great academies out there for learning and development professionals whether it’s through ATD or other academies out there. You can take these courses for a relatively cheap amount and build yourself a portfolio of skills. If you are in learning and development, you definitely need to have some sort of portfolio under your belt so that you can present it to somebody or organizations if you’re looking for a job or display your thought leadership on LinkedIn or your website so that people coming to you can easily see it. Portfolios and academies have really moved online. LinkedIn is also a wonderful platform to network, to showcase some thought leadership, and join groups in order to find people with commonalities. Networking is a human trait. If you live on a social network, you live longer, you feel better. Networking is always big and I love to meet people and get to know them.  Doyin: What are some trends you are witnessing when it comes to career development?  Lisa: There is this very big talk around big quit or great resignation happening in the USA. Many people call it a great inspiration. These people seem to be stretching themselves to see what is happening in the outside world. Sometimes, taking a career break has become a big thing. The tide is really slowly turning in career development that you can take a break to go do what you love- climb mountains, do yoga, etc.   Doyin: Would you like to share the top seven skills that learning and development professionals must have right now?  Lisa
