S2 E24: How Well Are You Managing Your Emotions?

Our emotions can cause a roller-coaster of feelings and if they are not managed effectively they can cause a lot of problems.

As a wise and effective leader or manager, it’s very important to be mindful of how you are feeling and how to appropriately manage your emotions. If we don’t manage our emotions we lose access to our Prefrontal Cortex, the part of our brain that helps us understand, memorise, recall, make decisions and inhibit basic urges - this makes us less intelligent.

This short 150-second video gives three simple tips for managing your emotions and becoming an even more effective leader and manager.

    Food for Thought:
❓How broad is your emotional vocabulary?
❓How good are you at reframing your emotions?

I look forward to seeing your thoughts and comments about this effect.

S2 E23: The Trap Of Unconscious Competence

S2 E23: The Trap Of Unconscious Competence

Are you falling into the trap of Unconscious Competence?

When we become highly proficient in a task, we can assume that it is easy. This is the trap of ‘unconscious competence’ and it can seriously undermine your ability to delegate. To delegate effectively you need to go back a step and help your people to know what they didn't know they need to know.

Wise leaders and managers are aware of how to avoid this trap and this short video explains what you need to do to delegate things even more effectively to your people.

    Food for Thought:
❓What are some of the complex tasks that you are unconsciously competent in?
❓How can this model help you delegate these even more effectively?

I look forward to seeing your thoughts and comments about how we make can easily underestimate our levels of competency.

S2 E22: How Do You Check Your Assumptions?

S2 E22: How Do You Check Your Assumptions?

Our brains are fundamentally lazy. They are designed to conserve energy. This makes it very easy to make assumptions and jump to conclusions.

There are always two sides to every story and as a leader or manager is it very important to check your assumptions and explore why other people see things very differently to you.

A useful model for doing this is the Ladder of Inference.

This short video gives a quick overview of the model and how you can use it to check your thinking and the thinking of others.

    Food for Thought:
❓What assumptions are you making about the people you work with?
❓How can regular use of this model help you become a better leader?

I look forward to seeing your thoughts and comments about how we make assumptions.

S2 E21: Tips For Dealing With Critical Feedback

Listening to critical feedback is tough. However, feedback is the breakfast of champions and the ability to respond to it effectively can help us develop and grow.
