We had our own state-sanctioned vigilantes in Mitchell 100 years ago, keeping the roads safe from thieves and lovers, in their endless fight against crime and prurience. Also, a recitation of the the theme song from the cartoon show Underdog, my favorite vigilante when I was a kid.

Great podcast!
Here is some insight passed on to me, …..the Bedford area was consider promised land for Georgia stone workers. Marble dust is effectively ground glass. Wasn’t uncommon to see workers coughing up blood. The real history of Tate Georgia has been scrubbed. It was Tate Georgia, Tate marble company owned by Tate family, they had contracts for all of the white marble govt headstones. You lived in Tate housing, shopped Tate store, one step removed from indentured slave. My grandfather moved to Bedford in 1920s to work in mills. That explains a lot of the southern traditions, our food was fried everything! Oven was to keep stuff warm while you fried more stuff!! lol
Bedford limestone was mainly calcium.
