Wonder of Parenting - A Brain-Science Approach to Parenting

Wouldn’t it be great if your child came with an owner’s manual? A how-to book on how to raise your child? And if your child came with such a manual, wouldn’t it be helpful to have someone walk you through it, making that owner’s manual come alive? Michael Gurian and Tim Wright serve as your guides through what they believe is the owner’s manual for your child: Your child’s brain. While the brain doesn’t tell the whole story, it does offer a treasure trove of insights into your son or daughter. Michael and Tim each have over 30 years of experience using brain science research, best-practices, and their own experiences as dads in helping parents read, understand, and implement the gift of your child’s brain, the built-in how-to manual that will help you enjoy the wonder of parenting.

Hmmmm….

As a parent and mental health professional who works with children I generally find the ideas presented in this podcast to be current and spot on. However the last episode on competitiveness references all ‘he’ and ‘his’. I know the question involved a boy, but it became very irritating. C’mon, guys! It’s 2023. This is an issue with girls now, too! Let’s move out of that box!
Not So Random

When I work up wide awake and saw that it was only 11:44pm, there was nothing else to do but stay up. I “stumbled” upon this podcast and found it helpful for a few reasons. First, unity in parenting is important. Addressing behavior appropriately is equally important (redeeming v. punishing). Having a support system is valuable. Using the right language is key to helping, rather than exasperating a situation. Thank you Tim and Michael. Being from the era when these issues were dealt with inappropriately, I am thankful for sound education. God bless you for all the good this podcast will do for so many.
Interesting!

Interesting to hear a little of the brain science behind certain behaviors. Love that they take listener questions and really do a deep dive for that person, but also make it relatable to all listeners. Looking forward to hearing more.

For me, this podcast has been enormously helpful on a number of topics. As I raise three boys under 10 years old, the information and insights have been practical and helpful to this chapter of life for me. Please continue to keep up the important work. Thank you!

Refreshing

I am currently reading Michael Gurion’s book, “The Wonder of Boys”. I heard him on a podcast previously and loved his perspective on raising our boys—was super happy to find this podcast. It’s refreshing to listen to someone that is an expert in his area and does not seem to be as extreme as these other parenting gurus. With so much conflicting advice out there I feel I have finally found someone who truly understands the beauty and messiness of parenting. Michael Gurian emphasizes the importance of allowing our boys to develop as they are biologically intended to and how we as parents can foster this development. I am so glad I stumbled upon this podcast!
Not brain-based, pro time out and spanning

Not worth your time. There doesn’t seem to be much science backing this up. Primarily the same parenting advice from a generation ago: boys will be boys, put them in time out, etc.
Not impressed

Not sure how episode 131 is going to inform or help parents in any way. I’m a mom who was looking for something interesting and refreshing to listen to. I thought the topic was suiting for me as a mother of a 9 year old doing virtual learning but their advice was just redundant. I don’t care to listen to any other episodes based on that impression.
Longtime listener

I’m elated to see this podcast still going. It’s educational, entertaining, and something I like to refer to when I need some perspective on a new situation. Excellent resource suggestions-people, books, etc.
