The sinking of the USS Indianapolis on July 30, 1945, is still the U.S. Navy's greatest loss of life at sea. Roughly 300 men went down with the ship and the other 900 were left to survive adrift in the open, shark infested, Philippine Sea for the next five agonizing days. Only 317 of those men would survive, against all odds- dehydration, starvation, exhaustion, delirium and of course... sharks.

Mary is also the author of "Reflections and Memories of An Amish Misfit: "My therapist says that's not true, but I digress". AND, as if that wasn't enough, they also host the podcast, The Misfit Amish and appeared in the Peacock docuseries, "Sins of the Amish", which we discussed in Episode 155- Amish Cults: Beneath the Bonnet.

Mary was born Old Order Amish but escaped in 2004 after being sexually abused most of their life. Now Mary works to bring visibility to LGBTQ Amish and advocate for Amish children suffering abuse.

Today Ash tells Fallon all about the Netflix documentary "Tell Them You Love Me." If you haven't seen it yet, the documentary tells the controversial story of Anna Stubblefield, a white university professor, and Derrick Johnson, a disabled, non-verbal black man with cerebral palsy. Anna claims she was able to unlock Derrick and help him communicate using a keyboard. Eventually they wind up in a "consensual sexual relationship," but Derrick's family (who have guardianship) isn't buying it. What follows is a court case that challenges how we define simple things like communication, disability, and consent.

Tom and Eileen were two young and in love, recent Peace Corps workers, who were just married on their way to start their adventurous new lives. Their first stop was scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. But they rose to the surface of the water to find their boat gone, and they were never heard from again.

IT'S SHARK MONTH!! This week Ash and former co-host Michelle talk about the scariest shark attacks that Ashley has ever heard of!

Ash tells the story of the 1982 sinking of the Trashman Yacht. As five people headed from Maine to Florida through "hurricane alley", they suddenly got hit by a huge storm. They were stuck at sea for days, with no supplies, surrounded by hundreds of hungry and aggressive tiger sharks. Only two of them made it out of the horrid situation alive. You may remember Ash telling this story in episode 8, back in the day. But don't worry, this time she added just a tad more detail, making the story twice as long, and realllly taking you there.
