005 - The Heart & Mind of Dr Chris Stepien and his influence on Upside Tattoo

What matters to you? Why does your business exist? Why show up everyday to work? Today I get the privilege of sharing this conversation with my good friend Dr. Chris Stepien of Barefoot Rehab in Denville, NJ and co-founder of Adhesion Release Methods. I intended this to be the first podcast episode, however delayed its release 5 months later because I over thought the technical aspects of it. Listening to it now, I couldn't care about the technical flaws of background noise, video quality, and my less than perfect introduction (I was going somewhere with it though!) Chris has changed my life physically (he's fixed my lower back, knee, and ankle pain), influenced the reason and meaning of why I operate Upside Tattoo and work with people the way that I do, and has been a guide to help me break through mental and creative blocks. 00:00 This episode was recorded 5 months ago--why it was delayed02:19 Dr Chris Stepien: "I Play Pain Doctor/Teacher" on TV 04:17 The Heart & Mind of Chris & his tattoos 09:21 Running a Professional Clinic & Expression as an Antidote to Depression, Shame, and Suicidal Ideation 14:30 Finding a Tattoo Artist You Connect With 19:04 Mushroom Story: Creativity, Channeling & The Tattoo Process, How can I better create for the client? 25:33 Why Does this Clinic Exist? 2. 004 - The Mug is Already Broken

004 - The Mug is Already Broken

My 19 month old son is always excited to help me make coffee; he's been working his way up to more steps, pushing more buttons, and most recently helping me get my coffee mug. This week however, he threw/dropped one of my favorite mugs down and it broke. No worries though, it was bound to be broken at some point in time. There's some things I've learned to expect from teaching a toddler to help and how to do things: things break, we learn, we grow, and we move on. Impermanence in a constantly changing world; we can live better remembering that. This week we answer some questions from my Instagram Broadcast Channel (if you haven't seen or joined it yet, it's at the bottom on my Instagram bio) The Andy Pho Podcast is available on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts. 00:00 Impermanence: The Mug is Already Broken 05:56 Let People Go & Build Them Up Anyway 09:29 The Sun Gives Without Expectations 11:10 Instagram Broadcast Channel: Updates 12:51 Q&A: Core Values That Guides Decisions and Actions 15:55 Parting Ways in a Relationship 20:11 Q&A: Drive & Motivation, Avoiding Burnout 22:41 Your Calling is Bigger than Motivation 24:21 Burnout is Temporary 35:45 Q&A: The Pause -- Help During Challenge Moments, Reframing Tough Situations Positively 41:01 Storytime: Throwing Things & Questioning Reactions for the First Time 44:41 You're Perfect Where You're At, But We Can Always Be Better I know your time is valuable and there's so many podcasts, videos, and books that you could be reading, watching, and listening to. 3. 002 - Our past indicates patterns, habits & possibilities

002 - Our past indicates patterns, habits & possibilities

We either repeat the mistakes of the past, or learn the lessons and prepare better. These two paths appear often throughout life so we'll unpack how to reframe and utilize the past rather than glorify it, to absorb the lessons and create a better path from where we are to where we want to be. At the end of my 14 mile run this weekend, totaling 35 miles for the week, this puts me at the nearly the same training progress for this year's Austin Marathon as last year's (which I under trained and under performed). The thought was "I've ran 50Ks before, with my longest run being 35 miles--I've got this", relying on my past experience to carry me through the present challenge. The reality is that previous accomplishments do not fully carry over into the future, but the lessons and experiences do. 00:00 Austin Marathon training & past marathon experiences 05:24 Don't be a "has been" or live in the "glory days" 07:29 Utilizing and reflecting on the pasts to change your path 13:45 The feeling and impact of quitting, failing, and giving up 14:47 New challenges & feeling like a beginner 16:17 Our problem with people, events and things are a reflection of us 19:04 What happened to us in the past is not fatalistic 20:00 The creation of your Higher Self, the best version of you 22:05 Journaling for clarity, bridging the gap between Present Self & Higher Self I know your time is valuable and there's so many podcasts, videos, and books that you could be watching, listening, and reading to. 001 - Just Start

Waiting for the perfect time, spending time overthinking and overplanning, over refining and editing.. and then sometimes we run out of steam and never get started. That's what happened when I wanted to start a podcast, so I just made it less complicated, made it as simple as possible, and just started. December 30, 2024, I was getting setup to record the 4th tattoo course for Charles' Nostalgia leg sleeve. I have a lot on my mind going on: from the course itself, to all the conventions and trips we just planned for 2025, the marathons I've been training for, plus I'm at the finish line with the book I'm working on and I've been talking (and have already started earlier this year) about doing a podcast. With all of my camera equipment out during setup, I decided to just set a camera up that I could talk to and just start recording. That's it, that's all it takes sometimes for us: is to get all of the complications and challenges out of the way, make it as simple as possible, and get started on whatever the task or idea is. It won't be perfect right away, you may not have all of the information or equipment, but the best momentum you can generate is right here, right now, with what you have. So we're here to set the intention: 00:55 BTS for the tattoo courses 06:29 2 Years at Upside Tattoo 08:45 Time and energy management, discipline, and work/life balance 22:00 Visualizing your progress, Tracking & measuring your actions 25:15 the French concept of "mise en place" and why it's important for every item to have a "home" 32:30 2025 Conventions & Guest Spots 42:35 Current training schedule for the upcoming 2025 Austin Marathon45:20 Look within and prioritize what makes you thrive Thanks for watching, listening, and reading. Share your thoughts in the comments, like this video if you found some gems within, and subscribe for more. And whatever it is you've been planning, delaying, and hoping to begin, just start.
