The Criterion Chat

I collect Criterion films, so am always on the hunt for Criterion-related podcasts. Criterion Chat is one of the better Criterion podcasts available. The discussion/analysis is intelligent and researched, and the hosts sound professional (i.e., no vocal fry or overuse of the word "like"). Recommend the Criterion Chat whether or not you are a collector.

My first listen is “In the Mood for Love” and I’m really disappointed with their take. Questioning if the movie is stylistic or atmospheric JUST because? Questioning if Wong Kar Wai just chose scenes randomly with no intention? Come on! Do some research on the director! Watch any supplement on the DVD for the movie! Read something about the film before trying to rip it up! It was infuriating to listen to one of them question every decision made by WKW without him knowing the director’s meticulous working style. I’m willing to listen to other episodes, but this first listen was hard to swallow.

Matt and Nate clearly have a deep love, knowledge, and respect for film and their discussions on this podcast are always insightful and enjoyable.
