    EP 003 : Intersectional Identities – The Power of Words and Language

    Dr. Lisa Martin talks about “marginalized identity”, “intersectional identities”, and the, often traumatic, experiences of being “pushed to the edges” of society. Dr. Martin explains that minority groups are often defined by others, leading to shame, oppression, and disempowerment. Using a strength-based approach in therapy, Dr Martin helps her clients find new words and language to describe their own identities. Words that are validating and empowering, and that express the true resiliency of the individual and the marginalized groups that he or she identifies with.
    This interview was conducted prior to the murder of George Floyd and the recent movement for justice, police reform, and putting an end to systematic racism.
    Dr. Martin has since written an article addressing structural racism, effects on children of all races, and provides tips on how to raise healthy children. She points out “children are watching us very closely right now. . . .we have to talk about this”. Here is her article:
