    Respectable Sins – “Unthankfulness”

    Respectable Sins – “Unthankfulness”

    ▪ Respectable Sins –  “Unthankfulness”
Though each of us acknowledge that everything we have and are comes from God (i.e., Dt. 8:11-18), we often fail to stop and give God thanks.
    ▪ Easy to take things for granted
    ▪ Easy to be ungrateful
    ▪ Easy to forget how serious of a sin failing to be thankful is to God – Romans 1:18-32 (esp. vs.21)
    Some helpful verses on thankfulness
    ▪ Ephesians 5:20
    ▪ 1 Thessalonians 5:18 [we can do so by faith in the promise of Romans 8:28]

Respectable Sins – “Envy, Jealousy, and Related Sins”

Respectable Sins – “Envy, Jealousy, and Related Sins”

Respectable Sins – Chapter 18 – “Envy, Jealousy, and Related Sins”
    Sins covered and defined:
Envy is the painful and oftentimes resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by someone elseJealousy is the intolerance of rivalry Competitiveness – an expression of selfishness; to win at someone else’s expense [not a virtue] Controlling – seeking to control others to our advantage or to get what we wantThere are two conditions that tempt us to envy: We envy those we most identify with, and we envy in them the areas
    we value most
     Romans 1:29 &; Galatians 5:21Jealousy
Envy is resent of a peer who has an advantage over us; jealousy is intolerance of rivalry Not always a sin (God states that He is a jealous God ~ Explain)Biblical example – Saul with David We need to learn to rejoice with those who rejoiceRomans 12:5,10Competitiveness

The strong urge to always win or be the top person in whatever our field of endeavor To win at someone else’s expenseThat being the best, winning, or #1 is what matters the mostControlling

The problem is that controllers most of the time don’t know that they are controllers They think they are just making sure things get done rightAbout getting your wayAll decisions of a group/committee/ organization have to go their way; compromise is not an optionThese people move from church to churchEphesians 5:21++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Respectable Sins – “Weeds of Anger”

Respectable Sins – Chapter 16 – “The Weeds of Anger”
    Most anger is a sin
Ephesians 4:26We are not going to address anger today as the by-products of anger
Ephesians 4:31 – Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Colossians 3:8 – But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 2 Corinthians 12:20 – For I fear that perhaps when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish—that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit,
and disorder.Noxious weeks that spring up from unresolved anger:

Resentment; Bitterness; Enmity and hostility; Grudge; & StrifeHow to deal with our anger so that it doesn’t result in these weeds:
We must look to the sovereignty of God Pray that God would enable us to grow in love (1 Peter 4:8) Learn to forgive as God has forgiven us++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Respectable Sins – “Lack of Self Control”

    Respectable Sins – Chapter 13 – “Lack of Self-Control”
Proverbs 25:28 – A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
Self-control is one of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) Other verses: 2 Timothy 3:3, Titus 2:2, 5, 6, 11-12; 1 Peter 1:13, 4:7, 5:8Self-control – the governance or prudent control of one’s desires, cravings, impulses, emotions, and passions
Biblical self-control is not a product of one’s own natural will-power (1 Peter 2:11Four areas of application [a tendency to indulge our desires so that they control us, instead of our controlling our
    desires]

    Respectable Sins –“Selfishness”

    Respectable Sins –“Selfishness”

    Respectable Sins – Chapter 12 – “Selfishness”
Jerry Bridges writes that “we can be very learned in our theology or very upright in our morality and yet fail to
display the gracious qualities of Christian character that Paul called the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
Remember, we are all born with a selfish nature
Not a learned attribute Easy to see in others; hard to identify in ourselvesDifferent degrees and different expressionsFour areas Bridges addresses
Selfishness with our interests – Philippians 2:4~ A good test of selfishness in our interests would be to reflect on the conversation after you have been
with someone and ask yourself how much time you spent talking about your interests compared to
    listening to the other person
    ~ Thoughtfulness – symptom of self-centeredness
Selfishness regarding our time~ All of us have a fixed amount of it
~ Can be selfish with hoarding and protecting our own or imposing and asking of the time of others
    ~ Galatians 6:2
    Selfishness with our money/resources~ Romans 12:15; 1 John 3:17
Trait of inconsiderateness – failure to think about the impact of our actions on others~ Feelings of others, needs of others
Need to look to the example of Jesus (Philippians 2)

    Respectable Sins- "Pride Pt 2"

    Respectable Sins- "Pride Pt 2"

    Respectable Sins – Chapter 11 – “Pride Pt 2 ”
Jerry Bridges addresses the sin of pride, but not pride in general, but certain expression of pride that are special
    temptations to believers:
    ·          Pride of moral self-righteousness, correct doctrine, achievement, and independent spirit
    Pride of Moral Self-righteousness
    ·          Luke 18:11 – Pharisee and tax collector
    ·          Feeling of moral superiority with respect to others
    ·          Can manifest in church, politics, economics, environmental policies, etc.
    ·         Some seem to get a perverse enjoyment out of discussing how awful society around us is becoming
    ·          Remember why Jesus told the parable above – Luke 18:9
    ·          Remedy:
We need humility (“there but for the grace of God go I”)
We need to identify ourselves before God with the sinful society we live in [Ezra 9:6]

     Pride of Correct Doctrine
Assumption that whatever my doctrinal beliefs are, they are correct, and anyone who hold another belief is theologically inferior
Of course we are to have convictions about the teaching of Scripture; of course doctrine and theology and teaching matters; but, we are to hold our convictions in humility, realizing that man godly and theologically capable people hold other convictions
    Pride of Achievement
    ·          Scriptures teach there is generally a cause-and-effect relationship between hard work &; success [Proverbs 13:4, 2 Timothy 2:15, 1 Corinthians 9:26-27, Philippians 3:12-14)
    ·          But ultimately success in any endeavor is under the sovereign control of God (1 Samuel 2:7
    ·          Deuteronomy 8:17-18; 1 Corinthians 4:7; Luke 17:10; Psalm 75:6-7
    ·         Remember, all is of grace – I deserve nothing, including recognition An Independent Spirit
    ·          Manifests usually in a resistance to authority and an unteachable attitude
