The Lion and The Sun: A Modern History of Iran

Iran’s history has been a never-ending struggle for liberty and independence. In this podcast, Oriana tells the story of how Iran ended up where it is now and how religion, monarchy, democracy, and nationalism all played important roles in defining the lives of its people. A journey that expands 200 years and reaches through three different political systems. New episodes every other Wednesday.

Come Alive

I love history and learning about different lands, cultures, religions, political systems, etc. I find it hard, though, to plod through an 800 page dry, academic tome. This series makes it come alive for me, particularly by turning two-dimensional historical figures on a page into three-dimensional people of flesh and blood. I also like that she draws a sketch of the community’s reactions to people and events, without which a listener cannot fully understand the context. I look forward to getting a glimpse into how the women lived these experiences, since so much history renders them invisible, when we know they are half of the population!
Gist of Iran’s history

Oriana’s captivating voice keeps one listening to her calm captivating narration. The whole narrations of Iranian history-gives one gist of this great country quest of freedom. Still marching on
Hard listen

The content seems good but the presentation reminds me of a bad high school speech project. The narrator sounds 16.
Great podcast!

I wanted to learn more about 20th Century Iran history. This is a great place to start.
Wish I could l love it

It is extremely hard to follow what the narrator is saying, even when I’m paying close attention. I keep having to repeat what was said. I don’t know what it is, if it’s the mono tonal manner in which it is narrated or the sometimes awkward sentences that seem to like proper punctuation. I had to give up on it even though I really wanted to learn more about this subject. It takes me twice as long to listen because I’m constantly “rewinding” to try and understand what was said. It’s also extremely difficult to understand who the narrator is referring to. Perhaps better editing would help or a speech consultant.
Great job

I enjoyed listening to every second of each episode. Thanks a lot and appreciate your hard work for introducing the history of my country to the others.
Caliph vs. Caliphate

I am listening to episode 1, and the subject is interesting, of course, but I find myself greatly put off by the repeated use of “caliphate” where “caliph” would be the correct term.
Check the proper names and typonomics

Please check the proper names and name of places, they are often mispronounced! All in all it’s a good podcast
Why did this pop up as recommended?

Monotone narration style makes it difficult to listen to. Script sounds like it’s AI generated. Pronunciation is off on most non-Western names.
Poor pronunciation
20/09/2024
The narrator does not appear to be Iranian. I can look past the pronunciation of Iranian names or locations. But,loop she can't pronounce some basic English words. Caucusus is not 'Cokoosus'. Allies is not 'alleys.'
