Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN, a noted presenter, provocateur, consultant, professor of nursing, and the American Nurses Association’s current Scholar-In-Residence. In the course of their conversation, Keith and Dr. Alexander converse on a variety of subjects, including being a Black nurse who embodies the dream that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. so passionately described in his famous speech. Dr. Alexander abhors what she refers to as "truth decay", and she is passionate about busting stereotypes. Detesting being put in a box, she has dedicated her life to kicking down the sides of the box and speaking and giving voice to the hurts and slights suffered by so many throughout history. Dr. Alexander feels blessed to have had a seat at so many tables, and advises others to get themselves into spaces where they can be seen and heard, and thus have more impact. G. Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN is a professor in the School of Nursing, Assistant Dean of Relational Excellence at the Adams School of Dentistry, and formerly the Associate Vice-Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion/Chief Diversity Officer of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At the end of 2019, she completed her presidency of the National League for Nursing, the national voice for nursing education which has over 40,000 nurse educators and 1200 schools of nursing. In February of 2021, she became the American Nurses Association’s Scholar-In-Residence and advises the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing. Dr. Alexander is the Senior Vice President for Clinical and Professional Services at the Tennessee Hospital Association and their first vice president of color for two decades. Ms. Gordon earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from John Carroll University in Ohio. After working seven years in various cost accounting and managerial positions, she chose to pursue a career in nursing and then nurse anesthesia. Kimberly graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She completed her Doctor of Nursing practice at Yale University where she and a colleague developed the first-of-its-kind Campaign School for Nurses and Midwives. As mentioned above, Kimberly is the co-founder of Healing Politics, a non-profit organization on a mission to inspire, motivate, recruit, and train nurses and midwives to run for elected office while building a culture of civic engagement within the professions. She is an adjunct faculty member teaching health policy and leadership at the Wake Forest School of Medicine and Western Carolina University. She practices anesthesia per diem for Novant Health in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Kimberly has always been involved in the nursing profession. First, in the NC Nurses Association, then the NC Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and most recently as a board member of Healthcare Providers for Greater Access and the Government Relations Chair for the NC Organization of Nurse Leaders. She loves talking about nursing leadership, professionalism, and political involvement with anyone who will listen.     Bridging the Gaps to Save Medically Complex Children

In the course of their conversation, Keith and his guests discuss the genesis and mission of Project Austin, which seeks to "create awareness within the community regarding the needs of children living with medical complexity and establish an emergency system that is specific to each child, to ensure that every child receives the correct care they require, and that such care is easily accessible within their local community." Tiffany Simon is the Project Austin Co-Founder at Children’s Nebraska. She has been a pediatric nurse for 22 years in Medical and Cardiac Intensive Care Units, Critical Care Transport, ECMO team, Trauma Outreach Coordinator, and currently the Project Austin Program Manager for Internal Affairs at Children’s Nebraska. Tiffany’s personal and professional career drives her motivation to provide optimal care for children with complex medical needs across the continuum. Her “why” is simple, Tiffany’s medically complex son, Austin, suffered a lethal medical error during an emergency. Austin’s death affected numerous people including the first responders and emergency department healthcare professionals caring for him. Tiffany’s passion includes providing exceptional to children with medical complexity by increasing awareness and education to the healthcare professionals who are called to care for them in a time of emergency. Natalie McCawley is the Project Austin Program Manager of External Affairs at Children’s Nebraska and one of the Program’s Co-Developers. Driven by a passion for medically complex children and the communities who are called upon to assist in an emergency, she has dedicated her life to improving outcomes and empowering EMS and Community Emergency Departments with the knowledge, preparation and resources needed to make a difference with this especially vulnerable patient population. Natalie graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) Nursing Program with her BSN in May of 2005 and accepted a position in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Children’s Nebraska. In February of 2010 she joined the Pediatric/Neonatal Critical Care Transport Team and became trained as an ECMO Specialist as well as a member of the heart transplant team. With a passion for education, she transitioned to the Transport Outreach Coordinator position in November of 2014 and graduated with her MSN in December 2016. While in this role, she closely worked with the Trauma Outreach Coordinator, Tiffany Simon, to co-develop Project Austin.
