Episode 12 - Wrapping up 2020 (with Andy Hair)

Episode 12 - Wrapping up 2020 (with Andy Hair)

This Episode concludes our year here at The PhysEd Table Podcast. It has been an awesome experience kick starting this little project and seeing it out from mid this year to the end of the year in amongst the craziness that has surrounded us, but turns out I was only joining a bandwagon of people who thought starting a podcast would be a good idea…
I really hope that everyone has gained something to “value-add” to their teaching (if I could again quote Episode 4’s guest Michael Smith). It has been so humbling to hear from a variety of educators who have joined me along this journey. And to all the listeners from Episode 1 through to now, thank you for joining us at The PhysEd Table and I promise that 2021 will bring more insightful and inspirational conversations with many more Physical Educators from around Australia who knows, maybe even the globe!
To wrap things up, I am joined by The PhysEd Table alumni, one of our inaugural guests - Mr Andy Hair to simply reflect and project. We are going to talk about this year one last time, and discuss our WINS, our challenges and the learnings that come from that but more importantly we are going to discuss 2021 and what we plan on bringing to our students and what the PhysEd landscape might look like after this year.
Andy mentions the Victorian Government’s statement released a few weeks back titled ‘Active Schools, Active Kids, Active Communities’ as well as the plethora of funding coming the way of schools and local communities to get our society back up and moving again - if you would like to hear more about this statement and the implications for schools and physical education teachers, ACHPER Vic have released a TOTW which is available to members which outlines the possible opportunities but also, if you are a school looking for funding opportunities - Sporting Schools has been given the green light for 2021 so get onto SportAus.gov.au to apply for Term 1 funding now!
So for one last time in 2020, let’s all sit back and pull up a seat and join Andy and I for a 2020 chat at The PhysEd Table.

Episode 11 - The table has turned on ME!

Episode 11 - The table has turned on ME!

Time for my turn in hot seat!
I joined ACHPER Tasmania's Vaughan Cruikshank and Sam Cure for an interview about my Virtual Presentation for the 2020 ACHPER Tasmania Virtual Conference.
I shared how Golf can be implemented in Primary School PhysEd Setting using the FMS Mastery Approach, Thematic Game Sense and Sport Education models across year levels. We also chatted about my journey and transition from Univeristy to the Full-Time Profession of Physical Education and Sport Coordinator, and how my move from Tasmania to Victoria as a graduate teacher cam about. There were also some candid conversations about 2020, the changes, the uncontrolaables and the forced adaptability of our practice.
I hope you gain some insight, inspiration and connection to my story and my passion, and how you can implement Golf in your school's context.
So pull up YOUR seat and join me at The PhysEd Table!

Episode 10 - Play, Wellbeing and Fitness Fun (with Dale Sidebottom)

Episode 10 - Play, Wellbeing and Fitness Fun (with Dale Sidebottom)

To celebrate Episode 10 of The PhysEd Table Podcast I thought it would be great to have someone join me that essentially started me on this journey of networking, particularly in the format of a podcast, but someone who has been able to inspire many many educators and people - Mr Dale Sidebottom.

As Chloe Dew described Dale back in Episode 8, he is an energiser bunny, who fills a room whenever he walks into one. He has an amazing thirst for learning, inspiring and creating, having presented across multiple countries, worked with elite sports clubs and industries, corporate giants and in amongst all that, helping thousands of schools generate a passion and love for learning through PLAY, WELLBEING and FITNESS.

And those 3 things are what Dale and I discuss in this episode. Dale shares his ideas on PLAY, how we can reconnect with it as adults, WELLBEING and the importance of creating holistic wellbeing experience now more than ever, and bring the FUN BACK TO FITNESS. Dale’s ability to instill confidence in yourself through his infectious enthusiasm really shines through and I hope you walk away from this episode with a hit of energy to help yourself, your school, your students, staff or even your friends and family find joy through PLAY, WELLBEING and FITNESS.

So let’s all sit back and pull up a seat and enjoy this truly inspiring conversation at The PhysEd Table with Dale Sidebottom.

Episode 9 - The NOW, NEAR and NEXT of Physical Education (with Bernie Holland and Jo Ritson)

Episode 9 - The NOW, NEAR and NEXT of Physical Education (with Bernie Holland and Jo Ritson)

As I made very clear on the socials this week I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to merely be in the same room (albeit viz Zoom) with these two Physical Educators. This episode I am joined by Jo Ritson once again and perhaps the person mentioned the most across these episodes - Mr Bernie Holland.
Bernie and Jo have known each other for a few years now and as John mentions in the podcast Bernie (like he has with many Physical Educators and Professionals across Australia and the world we find out) has mentored and supported Jo to integrate and consolidate as a Physical Education here in Australia. We begin discussing Physical Education in its truest sense and as the conversation flowed and we began to find ourselves questioning each other on a number of areas including the curriculum, teaching styles, content selection and assessment, as well as the influence social media has on our Professional Development and how we can better harness it for the future growth of our own and other’s teaching.
So without further ado, sit back and pull up a seat and I have no doubt that you will find many gold nuggets from this conversation at The PhysEd Table with Bernie Holland and Jo Ritson.

Episode 8 - The NOW and NEXT of Flipped and Virtual Learning (with Jo Ritson)

Episode 8 - The NOW and NEXT of Flipped and Virtual Learning (with Jo Ritson)

2020 has been a year of.... difference!

In Episode 8 I am joined by Jo Ritson from Rippenlea Primary School in Victoria and a newly anointed ACHPER Victoria Board Member.

I have got to know Jo through ACHPER Victoria and we have consulted with each other a lot during 2020, bouncing ideas off one another, especially during our remote learning time. Jo joins me on today’s episode to share and discuss her experience with Virtual Learning  and Flipped Learning. We discuss how these two concepts in the context of 2020 where many if not all educators in Australia and around the world have had to experience remote learning / learning from home in some capacity. But more notably we discuss the implications for Flipped and Virtual Learning into the remainder of the year and the future of education.

We discuss what changes are here to stay, what components we can use to enhance our teaching (and I take a note out of Episode 4’s guest Michael Smith: value-add to our teaching), and how it might all look moving forward. Jo has incredible insight to the Physical Education world with experience across a number of contexts and has been open in allowing others to shape her practice and philosophy, and you can see a number of approaches come through in her examples. Jo will certainly open your eyes and mind up to the possibilities this 2020 teaching experience can offer us moving forward and how we can take a strengths-based approach with our own teaching to grow and further develop our practice for stronger and lasting results.

So sit back and pull up a seat and we hope you take some inspiration from this insightful and thought-provoking conversation at The PhysEd Table with Jo Ritson.

Episode 7 - Functional Movements (with Matt Hanson)

We know the benefits of movement and physical activity on physical, social, emotional and mental health. However the stress it can also place on the body is often what leads to inactive lifestyles. Understanding how to move FUNCTIONALLY through safe and correct movement patterns can prevent this injuries, sedentary habits and low self-efficacy in adult life.
In this episode I am joined by Matt Hanson, owner of 3 Point Training, one of Melbourne's leading evidence-based Personal Training and Exercise companies, to discuss how we can get back to basics and ensure young people and young athletes can perform the basic movements that allow them to participate in exercise and physical activity across their lives.
We also discuss the current and future state of specialist training programs in schools and how we can begin to move shift the goal posts in sport and exercise conditioning and rehabilitation, set by American and European Schools and Academies.
