I’ve seen hundreds of women and moms get really vulnerable about a few things they’re currently struggling with and it’s been so powerful. A few weeks ago I posted my own version of this on a few Instagram story slides and I received an overwhelming amount of really positive feedback, so much so that I knew I needed to bring it to the podcast. So today on the show, I want to dig deeper on a few things that I struggle with daily with the hopes that you don’t feel alone. I also want this episode to serve as a reminder that it doesn’t matter how real a person is on social media, you’re still not seeing their whole lives.     I’m so excited to sit down with my friend and parenting coach Cassie Gudmundson and chat all about navigating toddler tantrums, regulating your nervous system, and setting boundaries that help you become a better mom. When people hear the phrase “gentle parenting,” many assume that it means allowing your kids to walk all over you without enforcing any boundaries or rules. The truth is, being a gentle parent means that you have to find the delicate balance between being empathetic to your toddler’s feelings and staying a strong leader who upholds boundaries. This becomes especially challenging when your toddler has a tantrum or when you’re dealing with other frustrating situations (*cue in mom rage*). Cassie and I give practical tips on how to handle these situations, build a parenting relationship rooted in love and trust, and, most importantly, embrace the fact that not every detail is going to be perfect!

    In celebration of launching my toddler sleep course, I wanted to chat a little bit more about toddler sleep today and the most common questions I get asked from my community. My hope is that talking about toddler sleep more and more will normalize the fact that it is biologically normal for 12 months - 4 year olds to still be waking at night. But with that, I know toddler sleep can feel really hard, but I don't want it to be harder than it already is, especially while raising a toddler – we're already dealing with their development and their counter will and the big emotions and the tantrums. I don't want you to also have to be dealing with really big sleep disruptions. So if you're at a place where sleep doesn't feel sustainable, this episode is for you.

    Trigger warning, I’ll get a little spicy in this episode of Resting in Motherhood as I debunk common toddler sleep myths. As I was working on my upcoming toddler course, I asked my community about toddler sleep advice that they’ve gotten that just didn’t feel right. I received an overwhelming response and narrowed it down to a few main topics that I will discuss (and refute) in this podcast episode. If you’ve ever been told to lock your toddler in their room or leave them to cry it out, I’ll explain exactly why these “methods” are extremely detrimental to your child’s development and what to do instead. The truth is, your toddler is not crying to manipulate you. Co-sleeping doesn’t make children clingy and overly dependent - it actually does the complete opposite. And, most importantly, you CAN make successful sleep changes in loving and gentle ways that are not rooted in separation and unresponsiveness.

    Why Toddler Sleep is More Complicated Than Baby Sleep

    This episode of Resting in Motherhood is for my toddler mamas (but it’s also good to have in your toolbox if your little one is still a baby), I want to talk about the difference between toddler sleep and baby sleep. When I first started supporting families, I imagined that I was going to be working mostly with zero to 12 month olds, but as my business grew, I started seeing more and more older babies come in and I quickly found out that toddler sleep is actually my favorite type of sleep to support clients with. It doesn't mean that I don't love working with zero to 12 month olds, I do, but toddler sleep is a lot more complicated than baby sleep and I want to dive into why that is. This episode isn’t meant to scare you, especially if you're in the first year and things already feel so hard. Toddler sleep is not harder, I think it is just more complicated. But I have so much support and resources for you that will help you feel empowered, confident, and educated when it comes to your child’s sleep.

    Even though Lilah is four years old, there are still days where I grieve my life before motherhood – even though I love her beyond words, even though I love who I am becoming. This is the paradox of the both/and of motherhood and I believe it’s something that I will struggle with even 20 years from now when I have grown child(ren) out in the world. This is something that I wish was talked about more openly in the motherhood space, which is why I’m excited to have my own life coach, Charlotte Irving on the podcast today. She believes in utilizing mindfulness tools as a way to help regulate our nervous systems and navigate our most profound emotions. She has offered me so much support through the hard parts of motherhood, my divorce, and everything in between.
