135 - Josh Freese :: Work Leads to More Work

"If you hate reading bio’s as much as I hate writing them, I’ll do us both a favor and try and make this short and painless. I’ve been playing drums with everyone under the sun for the past 30 yrs. Joined the musicians union when I was 12 to play Top 40 out at Disneyland and then started touring and making records when I was 15. I’ve appeared on hundreds of records with artists ranging from Michael Buble to Suicidal Tendencies. Nine Inch Nails to Glen Campbell. Sting to The Vandals. A Perfect Circle to Danny Elfman. DEVO to Guns n’ Roses. The Replacements to Weezer to…you get the picture. A bunch of fantastic artists and probably twice as many bad ones. I’ve made some solo records and have co-written songs with Queens Of The Stone Age, Guns n Roses, Sting, The Vandals, A Perfect Circle, Devo, and more.

134 - Eric "E-Panda" Hernandez :: From Mars to Earth

Eric “E-Panda” Hernandez is currently the session and tour drummer for Grammy Award Winner, Platinum Producer, and Elektra recording artist Bruno Mars. Hernandez was born in 1976 in Brooklyn, New York. He is the son of Brooklyn native “Pete Hernandez”, who was the percussionist for Love & Money and Cecilio & Kapono. Eric started drumming at the tender age of 4 and playing professionally at the age of 10 in Hawaii. He played 6 nights a week for 8 years with “The Lovenote Show” a Variety show paying tribute to the music of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. It was this unrelenting schedule that bred consistency in his playing and made him a master of all styles, be it soul, funk, reggae, rock and anything else the music demands of him. Eric quickly gained notoriety for his talent on the drums and became one of Hawaii's most sought after drummers. In the summer of 1995 Eric took his talent to Hollywood California. He immediately joined the Alternative/ Pop band “Louie Says” who was signed to RCA records. He was their session/touring drummer. Throughout the years he continued to play live and do session work for various artists such as Menudo, Travie Mc Coy and the Platinum producing team called “The Smeezingtons.” Eric has had the pleasure of sharing the stage and playing drums with Cee-Lo Green (Gnarls Barkley), Monica, Keri Hilson, K'Naan, Janelle Monae, B.o.B, Carmit Bachar (Pussy Cat Dolls), Tre Hardson (the Pharcyde), Kim Hill ( Black Eyed Peas), Travie Mc Coy (Gym Class Heroes), Jeff Baskar (Kanye West) and the Far East Movement. Hernandez is currently endorsed by DW Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks and Remo Drum Heads.

    133 - Aaron Comess - A Jazz guy in a Pop/Rock World

Aaron Comess is one of the founding members of the multi-platinum selling group the Spin Doctors, with whom he developed his innovative and recognizable drumming style.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Comess spent his early years in Dallas and began playing drums at the age of 9. He attended Arts Magnet High School, during which time he won Downbeat Magazine’s DB award for outstanding high school Jazz Musician two consecutive years in a row and had the honor of studying with renowned teacher Henry Okstel. Upon graduation, he went to Berklee College of Music, later continuing his music studies in New York City at The New School, studying under legendary session great, Bernhard Purdie.

While still studying at The New School, began playing the New York City club circuit with the other founding members of the Spin Doctors: Chris Barron, Eric Schenkman, and Mark White. The four quickly developed a huge New York City following playing at premiere clubs, such as The Wetlands.

As the drummer for the Spin Doctors as well as a collaborating writer, Comess went on to secure a contract with Epic Records. Comess’ playing and co-writing skills helped catapult the band to worldwide recognition, bringing them a Grammy nomination, American Music nomination and thus far, record sales of over ten million albums.

Additionally, Comess has also worked as a session musician, and producer with a multitude of talented artists, such as, Joan Osbourne, Bilal, Marc Cohn, Isaac Hayes, and Ivan Neville. Comess endorses Remo drumheads and Zildjian cymbals and drumsticks.

Currently, aside from playing with the Spin Doctors, Comess works as an in-demand session musician and a producer for various artists. His early inspirations ranged from Ringo Starr and John Bonham through to Chicago’s Danny Seraphine and - under the influence of his older brothers - the classic R’n’B of Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and James Brown.

Mickey got serious about drums from the age of 13 when he and two of his brothers formed a school band called The Rack. Later, Mickey went to a state school for music, but the academic route was not for him and he left early to play in bands.

When he was 17 he joined the Scratch Band in Connecticut where he first gained recording experience. Next Mickey started to make the two hour train journey into Manhattan and eventually joined a band called Tom Dicky and the Desires. They were managed by music mogul Tommy Mottola who also managed Hall and Oates - big news in the early 1980s.

Impressed by Mickey, Mottola asked him to record Hall and Oates’ new album ‘Private Eyes’. Around the same time Mickey met top producer Bob Clearmountain who’d just found a new singer called Bryan Adams. Within months Mickey had recorded Adams’ second album ‘You Want It You Got It’.

Next thing Mickey’s out on tour with Hall and Oates. All this was in 1981 when Mickey was 25. This was his big-break year and he’s never really looked back. The calls started to come in thick and fast - Tom Waits, Cher, Tina Turner, Los Lobos.

Mickey worked with Hall and Oates through till 1986, since then he’s been Bryan Adams’ regular drummer. He says “I get to sound more like me on Bryan’s records than on anyone else’s”.

He’s also had considerable success recording and touring with The Cult. He played on their 1989 album ‘Sonic Temple’ which sold three million.

During the period he was playing with Hall & Oates, Curry met producer Bob Clearmountain, who had recently begun working with a young Bryan Adams, and appeared on Adams' second album, You Want It You Got It. His appearance on nearly all of Adams' subsequent albums coincided with his rise to prominence. Following his stint with Hall & Oates, Curry began touring full time with Adams, a collaboration that continues to this day.

Other notable sessions have been with Alice Cooper, Stevie Winwood, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Carly Simon, T-Bone Burnett and Richard Thompson.

    Some Things That Came Up:
