"You should not be doing things with the objective of making a social media post about it. Go do things for the experience, not because you get to make a post." - Scott Gaffney
My guest today is Scott Gaffney. Scott is the filmer, director, and editor of the famous Matchstick Productions who makes some of the strongest ski movies in existence. Scott is literally the G in Shane McConkey's game of GNAR (Gaffney's Numerical Assessment of Radness) that we all love so well. He even edited and produced the movie GNAR. Scott has been all over the world and witnessed some of the most face-melting ski sessions that have ever done down. His love for Squaw Valley Palisades Tahoe shines through all he does and his stories of spending time with and watching the progression of his best friend Shane McConkey are absolutely golden. Scott's affinity for surfing in freezing cold Lake Tahoe during the winter is weird and fascinating. Scott is a world-class skier in his own right and is still crushing it at 52-years-old. Scott is truly an inspiration and what he's seen go down in the ski world is intensely unique.

    Thanksgiving Update 2021

    Thanksgiving Update 2021

Hello SnowBrains Podcast Fans, I'm your host, Miles Clark, with a quick Thanksgiving Week Update.
We're taking this week off from the podcast, we'll be right back into again next week, and I wanted to give you a quick update on some of the amazing guests we have coming up this season
Coming up on the podcast this season we have:
Legendary Professional Freeskier Ingrid Backstrom.  The conversation I had with her went deep and we pulled out some really pivotal turning points in her life including how Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington may have been a key to her successful professional freeskiing career, how she has changed after her brother Arne passed away, and how losing her passport put her in the ski movies.
Matchstick Productions Filmer and Editor Scott Gaffney.  Hearing Scott go over how the Game of GNAR came to be is pretty hilarious along with his funny stories from all the time he spent with his best friend Shane McConkey, his Lake Tahoe surfing addiction is also super interesting.
PhD Psychologist & ski mountaineer Russ Costa who goes over Decision Fatigue, avalanche heuritics, how altitude effects the brain, and we basically cover why people do dumb shit in the mountains.
Olympic Gold Medal Ski Racer and Alasaka helisking legend Tommy Moe sat down with us and told us all about his gold medal experiece, how it profoundly changed his life, we talking partying too much at times, and all kinds of Alaska heliskiing and mountain guiding in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Current World Cup & Olympic Skier Travis Ganong joins us and talk about the upcoming Olympics, what it's like to ski on the World Cup, and his insane freeskiing ability.  I've skied a bit with Travis at Squaw Palisades Tahoe and this guy could be perennially in the ski movies and already has been in a few major ski movies including Warren Miller.
Founder and President of the Indy Pass, Doug Fish - I'm going to be speaking with Doug today and I'm fired up to learn more about the indpendent ski resorts of North America and what they're doing to
So that's it for this update.  Have a great thanksgiving week and we'll look forward to beig with you next week on The SnowBrains Podcast

    Episode #23
Brought to you by Tamarack Resort & Killington
“I've done a lot of first ascents around the world, but it's at this point in my life, reflecting on that, I'd have to say [my greatest achievement is climbing is] a lot of the easy and moderate route development that I've done here around my community. You know, you're not gonna get on the cover of a magazine putting those routes up, but they're the most rewarding. It really feels good. And I think, you know, maybe my grandkids will climb there. My daughter's already climbing there.” - Todd Offenbacher
My guest today is Todd Offenbacher. Todd is one of the most amazing, hilarious, and entertaining people I know. He's a mountain guide, a badass rock-climber with first ascents in Pakistan, China, Peru, Alaska, Antarctica, and more, he's a Lake Tahoe television personality for Outside TV, he used to be a Body Builder at Muscle Beach in LA, he's currently in the middle of a community-building passion project where he puts in climbing routes all over Lake Tahoe for beginner and intermediate climbers and kids, he's the founder of Tahoe Adventure Film Festival, he's a professional speaker, and essentially a stand-up comedian. No one has a bad time when Todd's around and his story-telling is world-class.

    Episode #22
Brought to you by Alta & Scott Sports
My guest today is Bjarne Salen. Bjarne is best known for his talents behind the camera filming The Fifty Project with Cody Townsend where Bjarne documents Cody climbing and skiing the 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America. This video series has been insanely popular with somewhere around 15-million views on the 35 or so videos they've already created thus far.
That part of Bjarne we already know a bit about. What was fascinating to me was learning about Bjarne's extensive ski mountaineering history all over the world including Chamonix, Patagonia, New Zealand, Alaska, all over North America, and more. Bjarne's skill, resilience, and ability to stay calm in the mountains is remarkable.
Bjarne was filming his close friend Andreas Franson when Andreas passed away in an avalanche with legendary freestyle skier JP Auclair deep in Chilean Patagonia in 2015. Like so many of us who dedicate our lives to the mountains, this was not the only close friend Bjarne has lost. Learning Bjarne's perspective on life, his willingness to confront drastic change head-on and his vicious passion for the mountains changed me, and hope it changes you.
    Please enjoy!

Daron Rahlves - 4 Time Olympian, King of Kitzbühel, and World Jet Ski Champion
    Episode #20
Brought to you by Ikon Pass
"To me, downhill is number one. It is the most thrilling, most dangerous, highest speeds, and biggest air. My top speed recorded was 91mph. The fastest ever recorded was 100.6mph by a French guy."
    - Daron Rahlves on The SnowBrains Podcast
My guest today is four times Olympic skier Daron Rahlves. Daron was on the US Ski Team from 1993 to the year 2010. He has twelve World Cup victories, 28 World Cup podiums, three World Championship wins, seven US National titles, and in 2008 he was an X-Games gold medalist for skier cross. He's the only American in the World Cup era to win the Super Bowl of skiing; the Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbühel, Austria. Daron is also the only American to win the Super-G in Kitzbühel. Daron saw seven podiums in only five years in Kitzbühel which is unmatched in American history - Kitzbühel is just such a big deal. He has been to three Olympics as a ski racer, then one as a skier cross athlete. He was also the world jet ski champion in 1993. His Dad had the world waterski jump record at 158-feet back in 1964, which is insane! Daron has done the Baja 1000 motorcross race on a motorcycle in 2006, and took a terrible crash which he tells us about. In 2010, Powder elected him for 'Line of the Year' in their video awards, which is nuts. He's also been an athlete for TGR, MSP, Warren Miller, and Rage Films. Most of these he's just crushing big lines in Alaska and all over the world. Daron has been a Red Bull athlete since 2003. Daron grew up in the San Francisco Bay area, and now calls Truckee, CA home.
"I had a run of hip dislocations. Six. It was brutal; it is a pain you do not want to experience. I ended up having surgery after my last one because I figured there was something wrong. I had these two that to me felt like something was wrong."
    - Daron Rahlves on The SnowBrains Podcast
    Please enjoy!
