October is International Dyslexia Awareness Month. Join us as two passionate reading teachers discuss working with students with Dyslexia in the general education classroom. The impact on their personal philosophies, methods, and how they view students is forever impacted by students with print disabilities. 

In this episode, we will be talking about assistive technologies and how these technologies operate and can help support students with disabilities. According to Individuals with Disabilities by Dell, Newton, & Petroff, Assistive Technology is defined as “services and devices that enable people with disabilities to accomplish daily living tasks; assist them in communication, education, work, or recreation activities; and ultimately help them achieve greater independence and enhance their quality of life.”

We are joined by a special education teacher for a candid conversation about finding and using assistive technology to help our students with Dyslexia.

Gracelyn is a 5th grade student who was recently diagnosed with Dyslexia and has had many struggles with learning to read throughout her formative years in school. Shaylyn is her mother. Shaylyn is struggling to navigate the diagnosis and find the right resources for her daughter. This is a candid conversation about how Dyslexia feels and affects learning from the perspective of a 10-year old and the implications felt by the parent.

This is a bonus episode with a short introduction to CORE NMSU and our work. Our CORE team is made up of a diverse group of educators, coaches, administrators, interventionists, National Board Certified teachers, bilingual teachers, Special Education teachers and adult
educators that bring a unique variety of expertise. 

This podcast aims to support educators and spark dialogue and ideas through interviews and conversations that affect education in New Mexico today. However, we are happy if our content reaches beyond our home base as many of these issues are affecting educators nation-wide.
