Through Theology in a Year with C Michael Patton - 8: Don't Be a Folk Theologian 3
In this eighth episode of "Through Theology in a Year," part of our "Theology Unplugged" podcast, we dive deeper into folk theology with our third installment on this topic.
In this episode, we tackle some of the more challenging and controversial aspects of folk theology. I, Michael Patton, address misconceptions and deeply ingrained beliefs that often go unexamined. Some of the issues we'll discuss include the common interpretation of "where two or three are gathered in His name" and the belief that we will all have new abilities in heaven. We explore how these ideas can be misleading and the importance of critically evaluating such beliefs to avoid becoming a folk theologian.
Don't miss this thought-provoking discussion! Make sure to catch up on the previous episodes if you haven't already.

Through Theology in a Year with C Michael Patton - 7: Don't Be a Folk Theologian 2
In session number two of Theology Unplugged's "Through Theology in a Year," we delve deeper into folk theology—what it is, harder examples of it, and how to avoid becoming a folk theologian. Folk theology involves the uncritical acceptance of theological beliefs passed down through culture, family, church, or community. This time, we tackle challenging examples like the belief that angels have wings, that all people are good at heart, that all sins are equal in the sight of God, and that Jesus turned water into grape juice. Get ready to be challenged as we encourage you to examine and think critically about your own beliefs.

Through Theology in a Year with C Michael Patton - 5: The Peril of Tabloid Theology
In this episode of "Through Theology in a Year," we delve into the differences between folk theology and tabloid theology. We'll explore how folk theology, often passed down through culture, isn't necessarily wrong but is usually uncritically evaluated. We'll discuss various examples such as the belief in guardian angels and the question of whether all sins are equal. Join us as we critically examine these common theological concepts and separate cultural inheritance from scripturally sound theology.

Michael really unpacks scripture insightfully. I remember taking a class at church and really started to enjoy learning more about our Creator God
Insightful discussions
I’ve been a fan of Theology Unplugged for years. They don’t just touch on surface Christianity but dig deep into the theology and Biblical history surrounding the Bible. This podcast makes you think about and sometimes even wrestle with your faith. They deal with some difficult topics but bring the Bible to the forefront of discussing modern issues. This is not a watered down, seeker central “Christian” podcast. This is for people who are willing and wanting to think as well as understand the Bible on a deeper level.
A broken record this is not.
Michael Patton’s warm, rich, baritone, and broad sense of humor, brings to the listener of Theology Unplugged a critical resource to better understand your faith. Often, religious podcasts can be filled with platitudes that have lost their meaning with overuse, and they most often will bore the listener. However, Theology Unplugged challenges your assumptions, and pushes you to think deeper even about true things. Followers of the Christian faith and those who believe it to be a fairy tale will benefit from subscribing to this podcast.
