"Trauma Informed Care " Interview with Dr. Stephanie S. Covington, MSW, Ph.D
Dr. Stephanie Covington
Today, we’re joined by Dr. Stephanie Covington, an internationally recognized clinician, author, organizational consultant, and lecturer.
Listen in as Dr. Covington shares her upcoming appearance at the MARRCH Conference this October 24-26, 2022, during which she will give a keynote speech called “The Addiction-Trauma Connection”.
She then speaks on her journey in the recovery field and her particular focus on helping to improve interventions for women. She highlights the issue that treatment was originally designed for men, and so problems specific to women are often largely undressed. Further, there is often reluctance to share certain gender-specific struggles in mixed groups.
Dr. Covington also talks about her bestselling recovery book, A Woman's Way through The Twelve Steps and cautions against becoming too committed to a single approach to treatment since every patient is different.
Finally,Dr. Covington explains why the impact of trauma has been largely unacknowledged in the recovery field for so long, and her best practices that facilities and therapists would do well to improve their effectiveness in addressing trauma. She says that those seeking services need to see treatment centers as safe places, so that they are encouraged to open up and be led.

Key Quotes by Dr. Covington:
● Research shows that women do better in women-only treatment groups than in co-ed.
● It’s very hard for small programs to run gender-responsive treatment. It’s not impossible. It’s just hard. Women are better off in a group of two than they are in the group of ten men.
● When it comes to the effects of trauma, we’ve gone from denying to acknowledging, and we’ve gone from acknowledging to actually providing services.
You can’t change your family, but you can change yourself.
