What White Churches Get Wrong About Black Churches with Dr. Anthony Bradley

Sensational worship, but lacking in theological depth. Unnecessary titles. Too much politics in the pulpit. There are many misconceptions about the black church, and today’s guest is here to address them. Dr. Anthony Bradley is an author, a Professor of Religious Studies, and a Research Fellow at the Acton Institute. He joins Keith to set the record straight on several notable differences between black and white American churches today. The two also discuss problematic theologians and whether or not their contributions to the faith should be discredited due to the fact that they were slaveholders. Plus, how should Christians think about their vote? Was Vice President Kamala Harris a DEI candidate? What does it say about our country that we’re not talking about real issues, but instead basing our decisions more on “vibes”? And does the Bible provide a clear explanation for differences between men and women beyond biology? Lots of topics on the table. Buckle up! Have you benefitted personally from Truth Over Tribe or seen it have a positive effect on someone you know? have you used the podcast, book, or blog as a catalyst for conversation on polarizing topics? Should Christians Be Politically Involved or Withdrawn? with Michael Bird

Which came first: your political beliefs or the Bible’s stance on political issues? Too often, many Christians start with a political position and then go to the Bible seeking justification for their predetermined beliefs. But how can we truly know what the Bible says on specific political issues? And how involved should Christians be when it comes to politics? This week, Michael Bird, a New Testament scholar, Anglican priest, and author of “Jesus and the Powers,” joins Patrick to share a kingdom-oriented approach to politics and current events. He starts by explaining political theology and why Christians need to read the Bible from a more political perspective. He discusses how everyday Christians should think about the relationship between church and state and how Christians have failed in public discipleship. Plus, why would God risk sharing his rule and reign with humanity, and how does he hold government leaders accountable? Listen now! Trump, Harris, or Neither: Who Should Christians Vote For?

We’re officially less than a month out from Election Day 2024. In the last several weeks, we’ve had a number of Christians reach out asking a variety of questions: “Can I really support Donald Trump?” “Should I vote for Kamala Harris?” “Should I just vote for a third party, or is that throwing away my vote altogether?” We’ve been asking ourselves these same questions. So today, we’re enlisting some help. We reached out to a few friends, all of whom are Christians and none of whom are voting for the same Presidential candidate next month. First, we’ll hear from Brett Lloyd, a longtime polling expert with Independent Center, on why he’s chosen the independent path. Then, David French, an author and former constitutional litigator, joins us to explain why he’s supporting Kamala Harris. Erik Reed, a pastor and podcast host, shares his reasons for supporting Donald Trump. And finally, Lauren Onak, the VP candidate for the American Solidarity Party, explains why she believes a third-party vote is the answer. Our hope for this episode is that if you’re an undecided voter, you’ll walk away feeling more confident about how to steward your vote next month. And if you’re already decided, we hope hearing these varying perspectives helps soften your heart to fellow believers who are voting differently than you. Listen now! Are Christians Really Called to be World Changers? with Drew Dyck

How can we glorify God and bless others when we’re stretched to capacity? Are we really supposed to change the world when there’s work to be done, the house needs cleaning, and the kids are screaming? Today’s guest, Drew Dyck, is here to let us all in on a little secret: God doesn’t expect you to do everything! He wants you to be faithful, not famous, and just show up in your everyday, ordinary life. That’s actually how we change the world! Drew is a writer, speaker, and the author of the countercultural book, “Just Show Up.” Today, he starts by explaining where our misled desire to change the world came from and how social media has led many to believe that “celebrity Christian” status is both desirable and within reach. He shares why self-expressive individualism and authenticity are overrated and issues a call to remember the importance of our roles in others’ lives. He ends with a challenge: where are the places that all Christians must “show up” for each other? Listen now! COVID: What We Got Wrong with Former NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins

Follower of Jesus. Leading scientist. Is it possible for those to describe the same person? Dr. Francis Collins joins us today to prove that he’s both. As the former director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Collins is a polarizing figure inside and outside the church. He starts by explaining how he approaches apparent conflicts between science and the Bible, such as gene editing and studying the tissue of aborted fetuses. He expresses his disappointment in how politicized science has become in today’s culture, using COVID as his primary example. But is there anything he regrets about the ways the government handled COVID? Were mandates, masks, social distancing rules, and shutdowns really backed by science? Was the COVID vaccine as safe and effective as it was originally promoted? Does he believe that our country is more prepared for the next pandemic? Buckle up! Why Is Everyone So Anxious? with Steve Cuss

Everybody’s (still) talking about anxiety. We now know more about it, we’re more medicated for it, but it seems to be getting worse. Is there something about anxiety that we’re all missing? Steve Cuss, author, pastor, podcaster, and former chaplain, talks about anxiety in a way that few do. Today, he’s here to share some anxiety “secrets” from his book, Managing Leadership Anxiety: Yours and Theirs. He starts by defining anxiety and explains how chronic anxiety is a different form that’s usually based on a person’s unmet false needs. He discusses anxiety in the context of a group and what a healthy, nonanxious team looks like. He lists every human’s five core false needs and explains how we can identify our own. He shares how chronic anxiety spreads and where he sees anxiety expressing itself on a cultural, national level. Plus, how can we personally work on becoming a nonanxious presence in such an anxious world? Listen now! Could America Survive 9/11 Today?

Where were you on the morning of September 11, 2001? If you were old enough, you likely remember that day in great detail. Today, on the 23rd anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, Keith and Patrick are sharing their own memories from that day, recounting the facts of this tragic event, and reflecting on how much the world has changed since. What would it be like for such a grave national tragedy to happen in today’s world? How much would social media and smartphones change our “facts” and reactions? Would disinformation abound? Would Americans still come together in solidarity? Would distrust in the media and the government allow us to grieve properly? Would America be equipped to face a national challenge of this magnitude today? Listen now! Faith Over Football with Mizzou Head Football Coach Eliah Drinkwitz

It’s finally football season! We’re kicking it off by sitting down with Mizzou head football coach, Eliah Drinkwitz. (M-I-Z, anyone?) Keith and Coach Drinkwitz start by tackling some deep questions about his success, whether or not he believes it’s the product of hard work or luck, and how he’s able to stay humble. He shares his story: how he grew up in a Christian home, how he got into coaching, and how he makes time for his family as a husband and a girl dad of four. Then, he gets into some sports-related topics: Has NIL ruined college football for fans? What are his thoughts on sports betting? And based on his players, would he agree with current statistics that many men are falling behind? Plus, where does he find it the most challenging to keep his Christian convictions? Listen now!
