    Welcome to the third Sunday of Advent. There's a part of the Christmas story that is often overlooked. A man named Simeon had been promised by God that he would not die until he had seen the Christ child. And a woman named Anna had spent most of her old age waiting at the temple for his arrival. Their promises came true when Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus came to the temple for his cleansing. What does that mean for us today? How committed are we to the good work of justice and righteousness in our world?     As of this message, we are hours away from casting our final votes for who will be the next president of the United States. Getting here has been hard, emotional, and disconcerting. Families and friends have staked their territory and many have chosen not to listen to the other side, outside of the targeted parts and pieces their own side wants them to hear. Our nation is fractured, maybe not as drastically as it was in the mid-1800s, but probably as divided as it's been since. It would be a good time to be reminded of Jesus' words in Matthew 22 that loving our neighbor is not an option, and Abraham Lincoln's words to a broken nation as the Civil War was coming to an end...     “We are the Body-that’s who we are” by Pam Lee-Miller

    This Sunday we continue our worship series that invites us to extend ourselves beyond the divisions we feel in this world. We will consider what it means to respect each other, irrespective of our differences. "R.E.S.P.E.C.T., find out what it means to me." Aretha Franklin convinced us that it means a lot. Sometimes we think having respect means to agree or be the same, but that is not actually the depth of what respect is about. It comes from the Latin "respectus" which means "the act of looking at one often, to consider, to observe." We are called to respect by tending to one another. We'll see you this Sunday to continue our series, "Do Unto Others."
