32 episodes

Hosted by international bestselling author and journalist Omar El Akkad, Without explores all of the things we can't imagine losing. In some cases, it’s something we’ve already lost – species, natural phenomena, places. In other cases, it’s things we should probably learn to live without, like fossil fuels or nuclear weapons. Every episode of WITHOUT is a thought experiment – what would the world look like if something we’ve become used to were no longer around?

HyperObject Industries & Sony Music Entertainment production.

    Advertising

    Advertising

A world without advertising? Wishful thinking. Or is it? Omar’s interrogating how and why ads weave through our lives, and if a world without them is conceivable. Today's episode features two conversations: Ryan Lough discusses his background making ads and his new film You Need This, which interrogates consumerism and hyper-capitalism, and Andrew Oswald shares his perspective as a professor of economics and behavioral science.

    Guns

Is having a gun an expression of some sort of freedom? The ubiquity of guns in the United States certainly suggests so. Today, Omar talks with David Yamane about his changing relationship to firearms, and if a world without them is conceivable.

Not sure

Love the idea. I live in portland and find that you need to update your information. Overdoes are way up and the highest in the country among children. The optics aren’t the smoking drugs vs beer drinkers. It is watching as a beautiful soul slowly fades until they die. If that sound poetic, it’s not. It’a gruesome, grotesque, and horrific.

Insightful

Very good writing, information/history told in story form. Always walk away feeling appreciative of something, but more inclined to protect what I would have otherwise considered a “given”.
