Die rand is sterker en die beurs is op en almal praat oor hoe positief die markte is oor die verkiesingsuitslag en die regering van nasionale eenheid, maar hier en daar is ʼn ekonoom wat sê, nee wat, plaaslike politiek is glad nie so belangrike drywer as wat ons dink nie. So wat is dit wat tel? Dit staan bekend as die sogenaamde “carry trade”.

The rand is stronger and the stock market is up and everyone is talking about how positive the markets are about the election result and the government of national unity, but here and there you find an economist who says, no, local politics is not as important a driver as what we think. Statistics South Africa released May's consumer price inflation figure yesterday. It was unchanged from April at 5.3% after economists expected a slight increase. Month-on-month, the index figure rose by 0.2%. The good news is that food prices continue to rise more slowly.
