#48: Key Takeaways from episodes 9 through 12 on becoming the best version of yourself

#48: Key Takeaways from episodes 9 through 12 on becoming the best version of yourself

Reflection is an integral part of the pursuit of constantly learning new things. This generally involves making connections between the theories you started to practice and your own learning experiences. In this episode, I will walk you through some of the key practices I implemented from the discussions with my guests that are experts in Psychology, Neuroscience, Medical practitioners, Biohackers, and Chiropractors. I talk about my favorite lesson on people being biased I took away from the interview with Dr. Kartik. Next, I discuss how I implemented Dr. Rashid’s strategy for the positive use of electronic devices. Another piece of advice that really resonates with me well is the methodology to empower yourself to overcome body and headaches.

My curiosity about learning new things drove me to try and implement these lessons into my everyday life. It might sound easy and simple when you listen to it, but trying to find the time and place to actually commit to doing these is a lot harder than it sounds :) You might find some of them to be too restrictive and limiting, but believe me that these few had an impact on my way of living.

I strongly encourage you to listen to the very end and really think about all the things you need to do to be able to answer Yes on the final question of this episode.

#47: Scott Kaufman - Understanding the human needs, finding meaning in life and pursuing life goals

#47: Scott Kaufman - Understanding the human needs, finding meaning in life and pursuing life goals

How do you pursue the right goals and find meaning in life? Pretty big questions. My guest in the episode, Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman is a big name globally in the humanistic psychology space and has a suggestion on this from a psychological standpoint.

In our enchanting conversation, Dr. Kaufman told me what got him into psychology and described his most monumental rework of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

In this conversation, Dr. Kaufman reveals segments of his last book where he updates the common understanding of Maslow’s theory by exploring less-well-known writings of Maslow’s, and also by incorporating more recent empirical psychological studies. He suggests the more dynamic model that complements the modern fast pace of living, incorporating some standard basic security needs then expanding into more creative and dynamic capabilities. It’s an interesting take on the importance of appreciating that the nature of our lives is constantly changing and I really hope that this talk will help all kinds of minds to live a creative, fulfilling, and self-actualized life.

Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman has taught courses on intelligence, creativity, and well-being at Columbia University, NYU, the University of Pennsylvania, and elsewhere.

Scott received a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Yale University, and an M. Phil in experimental psychology from the University of Cambridge under a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. In 2015, he was named one of “50 groundbreaking scientists who are changing the way we see the world” by Business Insider.

#46: Dr. Michael Tompkins - How we Sleep and the Quality of Sleep We Need

One of the biggest challenges in the modern world is maintaining high cognitive performance. My guest in this session is Dr. Tompkins, a licensed psychologist, sleep specialist, and mental health educator, and we delve into the mental health issues and contributing factors that play a significant role in how we sleep and the quality of the sleep we are getting.

We explore some of the common sleep disrupters, such as stress or travel, how to get quality sleep, and optimal sleep schedules. Dr. Tompkins explained the impact of naps and his working strategies and techniques for falling asleep and make the most of it.

Michael A. Tompkins, PhD, ABPP is a licensed psychologist (PSY13822) and board-certified in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology, co-director of the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy, Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, Diplomate and Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, and is a trainer and consultant for the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior. #45: Key Takeaways from episodes 5 through 8 on how to be the best version of yourself

#45: Key Takeaways from episodes 5 through 8 on how to be the best version of yourself

So far, Growth Island has been full of industry insight and awesome storytelling.
In this short episode, I share my favorite lessons I learned from interviewing some of the knowledgeable experts, Martin Kremmer, Martine Kveim, Andy Mant, Michael Auchenberg & Johannes Hoseth.

My pursuit to constantly learn and try new things drove me to try and implement these lessons into my regular practice. It might sound easy and simple when you listen to it, but trying to find the time and place to actually commit to doing these can be harder than it sounds :) However, these lessons resonate with me a lot and I had to give em a try and practice those as much as possible. Adding and removing things to our schedules often means that we are moving and improving.

So tune in and see if you can apply those into your life. It’s well worth the 5 minute listen!

#44: Howard Ross - Why All Humans are Unconsciously Biased and Bridging the Divide in Our Society

We live in a world driven by bias and stereotypes. Discover how a social justice advocate like Howard Ross defines the complexities of belonging, modern tribalism, and controlling stereotypes.
I had a chance to talk to him about the importance of stereotype filtering, how to gain clarity about our own biases, and how to determine if that is something that helps us or holds us back. Howard explains why he thinks that the “Maslow Needs system is wrong” as it doesn’t account for the unconscious bias. Finally, Howard wraps everything up with a piece of nice and easily applicable advice.

Howard Ross is a lifelong social justice advocate, and is considered one of the world’s seminal thought leaders on unconscious bias. He is a Founding Partner of Cook Ross, Inc., and author of ReInventing Diversity, Everyday Bias, and Our Search for Belonging. He has been published by Harvard Business Review, the Washington Post, the New York Times, Fast Company, Diversity Women, Forbes, Fortune, and others. He appears regularly on National Public Radio. Howard currently serves on the Diversity Advisory Board of the Human Rights Campaign, the board of the Dignity and Respect Campaign, and the National Women’s Mentoring Network. He has collected a ton of awards and accolades for all his work in all these various spectrums.
