Beethoven: The Basics with Andy Bush
Andy Bush loves rock and indie music. He’s been ‘classical curious’ for a while and is fascinated by Ludwig van Beethoven, but doesn’t know where to start. Until now. Andy takes the plunge into Ludwig’s life and music in the great composer’s 250th year, with a bit of help from world-class musicians including violinist Nicola Benedetti, conductors Sir Mark Elder, Jonathon Heyward, Carlo Rizzi and Karin Hendrickson, cellist Matthew Barley, pianist Stephen Hough and clarinettist Julian Bliss. Discover more about Beethoven in these bitesize podcasts, based on a 4-part series broadcast on Scala Radio in Spring 2020, produced by Jenny Nelson for Bauer Media.

Really enjoyed this podcast. The presenter makes it accessible for anyone yet uses experts to share their knowledge. It is great to hear some excerpts of music (if only they were longer!) combined with lots of detail about Beethoven’s life, without being overly complicated. A fun and interesting show to bring entertainment to your boring drive home! I really hope this is followed up with similar series of podcasts on other composers, perhaps Chopin, Schubert? Or perhaps you could group a few together and do a podcast on a particular period.

Classical music didn’t feature in my childhood, but I have always wanted to know more about it. This series is a lovely way to learn, very accessible with down to earth presentation by Andy Bush. I hope more composers will be covered.
